Aaron If Ben asks you to go pick him up, donât answer. Mark as unread. Then Ianto will have to go get him!
Robin This sounds like it could go horribly wrong.
Aaron No, itâs fucking genius!
Ben
Sitting in the break room at midnight with Ianto and a plate of fried brie and chips wasnât something Iâd ever expected to be doing, but now that we were there, I couldnât imagine being anywhere else. I still felt bad about dragging him out so late, but selfishly I loved getting to have him all to myself for a few hours.
Now I just had to follow through and bloody talk to him before the moment slipped through my fingers again.
I speared a chip on my fork and thought for a moment, casually watching the snow through the small window set high on the wall. It was just about visible in the glow of the security lights Iâd turned on on the walls facing the courtyard. I didnât mind snowâit was pretty when it was undisturbedâbut I hoped it hadnât come down so heavily we wouldnât be able to get the car out. The roads around here werenât built for snow, and a couple of inches were the same as a couple of feet.
It wasnât worth worrying about, though, because it wasnât like we could go anywhere now, even if we wanted to.
âWhatâre you thinking?â Ianto asked, catching me staring out at the night.
âNot much. Just looking at the snow, hoping itâs not too deep.â
âNot a snow fan?â He grinned. âDonât tell me you hate snow as much as you hate Christmas?â
âI donât hate Christmas! I just never really got what the fuss was about, I guess.â I jabbed a wedge of brie with my fork, breaking it open to let the melted exterior run over some chips. âIâve always been a little cynical about the whole Christmas is magic thing, but thatâs probably because my parents worked the kind of jobs where Christmas doesnât fix things. My mumâs a paediatric nurse, and my dad worked for the police doing vehicle collision investigation before he got cancer. They tried their best to make Christmas fun and magical, but thatâs hard when youâve just had to visit a family and tell them their dadâs been in a fatal accident or when youâre trying to help a family celebrate with a kid who probably isnât going to get any better. They were good at compartmentalising, but I guess I just picked up on it. Especially because we didnât always do Christmas on Christmas, and sometimes it could be a bit⦠muted.â I could almost feel Ianto wincing, and I didnât want that. He loved Christmas and I didnât want to ruin it for him. It was time to change the subject. âSorry, didnât mean to bring the mood down.â
âItâs fine.â He reached out, his fingers brushing the back of my hand sending a rush of sparks across my skin. âIâm sorry for pushing.
