SWANSEA’S MAIN LAD through the 1990s was Mildred. In 1990-91 he was actually manager of a trendy clothes store in Swansea, a venture which didn’t last long due to the poor number of dressers in the city. He had to do the occasional shift at its sister shop in Cardiff and, being young and keen at the time, we loved to wind him up. It was always hilarious him denying who he was. He will also recall the fake shotgun put to his face outside Martha’s night club in Swansea one night after one of the boys got beaten up there. He wasn’t to know it was a fake. The lad who did it was knocking off a girl in Port Talbot. One morning he got the train back to Cardiff and looked up the carriage to see 50 Swansea with Mildred sitting at the front. They made eye contact and he saw Mildred pondering, Where do I know him from? Needless to say, our lad didn’t stay on the train for long. I spoke to Mildred a few times and he’s the only Jack that has held his hands up and admitted they could never compete with us.
In fact they have a bad reputation for pointless attacks on innocents or small groups. One notable example came when they were travelling to Derby in the Worthington Cup. They stopped near Cardiff and popped into an Asda supermaket. Some of them started abusing a young Cardiff fan, causing a commotion big enough for the police to be called. Their bus was stopped from going any further, so they went into Cardiff city centre to further abuse office workers and normal law-abiding people. Another classic came before they played Millwall away, when their so-called top boy put flyers and posters around the city centre advertising their intentions, thus ensuring the police would shadow their every move and afford them plenty of protection.
I grew up with some Jacks myself in the Valleys and some are as good as gold but most of them are very naive when it comes to football hooliganism, with little going on upstairs. They have also been heavily into the British National Party, Ulster Unionism and far-right politics: racist fools stuck firmly in the 1970s with their pointless views. A few racist idiots have followed Cardiff over the years but they don’t last very long. This is also one of the reasons why the Jocks rarely follow the Welsh national side abroad, unlike Cardiff.
