The pair returned to the metal and glass shop to find Urza deep at work, hammering out a number of metal plates.
âIs this for a new project?â Kal hopped up onto his usual seat in the workshop.
Urza grunted and swept her slick hair from her face.
The heat of the forge swept through the open area. It was good that the workshop was outside, otherwise, it would have been absolutely sweltering.
âI look forward to seeing it,â Kal smiled up at her before going over what theyâd found from the moon elves.
Urza grinned as she hammered another plate into shape. âSounds like Frederick and Merellen are shacking up out in the woods.â
Neda frowned. âThey are not. Frederickâ¦â She didnât want to say it, but Frederick didnât seem like Merellenâs type. He wasnât confident enough, not out of his shell enough. If he stood with his spine straight and his shoulders back, the way he had when Kal had gotten him riled up, maybe he would be her type.
âHeâs got the type of shoulders women like,â Kal said, sitting and licking his paw.
âItâs more Merellen.â Neda shrugged. âI just donât see her with his type.â Then again, Merellen had been quite cold when sheâd thought Neda was interested in the wizard. Maybe she was being territorial. Maybe he was more her type than Neda thought.
Kalâs tail flapped on the stool as his eyes narrowed. âYou know, Merellen was talking about doing renovations to her café soon.â
âYour workshop could use some renovations,â Urza quipped.
Kal stood, his spine bending and tail out straight. âYou seem to do well enough with what Iâve given you.â
âAfter I organized your tools.â Urza nodded to the tools hanging on the wall.
âHow dare you ruin my perfect system!â Kal hissed. âI took months perfecting my tools. You put them back this minute!â
âYou took months to make a mess while I took minutes to make it make sense!â Urza shouted back. âIâm the one using the tools, anyway. You can change it back when Frederick finally figures out how to change you back.â
âThat could be weeks, or months!â Kalâs ears flicked back and he hopped onto a table, edging closer to Urza.
Neda jumped forward between the two. âStop! This isnât helping. We need to focus on who stole the stone.â
âTell that to Kal. Heâs sitting over her talking about renovations.â
Kal huffs. âThatâs the point I was making. Her café does well, but Iâm not sure it does so well she can remodel the place. Where did she get the money, I wonder? The moonstone could sell for quite a bit, pay for her renovations.â
âWell, if nothing else, itâs another reason for us to go into the woods.â Neda grabbed a ladle of water and brought it to Urza. âI want to know whatâs out there.â
Urza smiled and took the ladle. She drank and handed it back to Neda. âJust to be clear, you both want to go play in the woods, in the middle of the night, when thereâs an unknown, giant creature lurking about.
