The pair returned to the metal and glass shop to find Urza deep at work, hammering out a number of metal plates.

“Is this for a new project?” Kal hopped up onto his usual seat in the workshop.

Urza grunted and swept her slick hair from her face.

The heat of the forge swept through the open area. It was good that the workshop was outside, otherwise, it would have been absolutely sweltering.

“I look forward to seeing it,” Kal smiled up at her before going over what they’d found from the moon elves.

Urza grinned as she hammered another plate into shape. “Sounds like Frederick and Merellen are shacking up out in the woods.”

Neda frowned. “They are not. Frederick…” She didn’t want to say it, but Frederick didn’t seem like Merellen’s type. He wasn’t confident enough, not out of his shell enough. If he stood with his spine straight and his shoulders back, the way he had when Kal had gotten him riled up, maybe he would be her type.

“He’s got the type of shoulders women like,” Kal said, sitting and licking his paw.

“It’s more Merellen.” Neda shrugged. “I just don’t see her with his type.” Then again, Merellen had been quite cold when she’d thought Neda was interested in the wizard. Maybe she was being territorial. Maybe he was more her type than Neda thought.

Kal’s tail flapped on the stool as his eyes narrowed. “You know, Merellen was talking about doing renovations to her café soon.”

“Your workshop could use some renovations,” Urza quipped.

Kal stood, his spine bending and tail out straight. “You seem to do well enough with what I’ve given you.”

“After I organized your tools.” Urza nodded to the tools hanging on the wall.

“How dare you ruin my perfect system!” Kal hissed. “I took months perfecting my tools. You put them back this minute!”

“You took months to make a mess while I took minutes to make it make sense!” Urza shouted back. “I’m the one using the tools, anyway. You can change it back when Frederick finally figures out how to change you back.”

“That could be weeks, or months!” Kal’s ears flicked back and he hopped onto a table, edging closer to Urza.

Neda jumped forward between the two. “Stop! This isn’t helping. We need to focus on who stole the stone.”

“Tell that to Kal. He’s sitting over her talking about renovations.”

Kal huffs. “That’s the point I was making. Her café does well, but I’m not sure it does so well she can remodel the place. Where did she get the money, I wonder? The moonstone could sell for quite a bit, pay for her renovations.”

“Well, if nothing else, it’s another reason for us to go into the woods.” Neda grabbed a ladle of water and brought it to Urza. “I want to know what’s out there.”

Urza smiled and took the ladle. She drank and handed it back to Neda. “Just to be clear, you both want to go play in the woods, in the middle of the night, when there’s an unknown, giant creature lurking about.
