Chapter Eleven
Jenny had known sleep wouldnât come easily, but sheâd counted on getting a full eight hoursâ rest once she finally drifted off. The tug on her waist at the break of dawn proved she was wrong. She caught a glimpse of Mattâs shoulders as he was doing his push-ups. She turned over and hid her face in the pillow, but she could still see the play of his muscles in her mindâs eye and smell the not-unpleasant odor of his sweat-dampened flesh.
The next thing she knew, Mattâs voice rasped in her ear, âWould you mind getting into my bed, Jenny?â
She sat up abruptly, saw he was wearing no more than a towel, and clamped her eyes shut. âDonât forget the toothpaste in the sink,â she muttered as she complied, careful not to open her eyes.
The tension between them was suddenly back.
Jenny was aware of Matt every moment during the very long day that followed, because neither of them had work to distract them. She filled the time reading, when she wasnât packing for their trip to the west coast. Matt seemed as restless as she felt, pacing like a caged animal. She was relieved when the time finally came to take a cab to the airport for their evening flight.
Jenny had called ahead to the airport to say that she and Matt would be tied together with a rope and to explain the nature of her project. Although there were a few stares at the security gate, they made it through with a minimum of fuss.
Things didnât go quite so smoothly once they got to San Francisco. Jenny had booked reservations at a hotel far enough in advance to make sure theyâd have twin beds, but it seemed there had been some mix-up, and the only room left had a king-size bed. Jenny would just as soon have gone to another hotel, but with the three-hour time difference, it was already midnight in New York, and they would have a tough time finding last-minute accommodations at nine oâclock on a Saturday night.
When the young man at the registration desk confirmed that nothing else was available, Jenny made a decision. âWeâll take it.â
She breathed a sigh of relief when she saw the bed. It was huge. She glanced surreptitiously at Matt. He wasnât chewing the inside of his cheek anymore, something that had begun when heâd heard theyâd be sharing a bed. Surely they could manage to sleep together in such a big bed without accidentally touching. Just in case, she planned to bundle the bedspread between them.
âYou can have the bathroom first,â Matt said.
âAll right.â It suddenly dawned on Jenny that the bathroom was considerably farther from the bed here than in her apartment. In fact, if she had reason to use the facilities during the night, as she sometimes did, sheâd have to wake Matt up to do it. In the future, she realized she would need to ask for more details about the rooms they had to share.
