CHAPTER 15

“Now I know you done lost your mind!” Faith Carson was angry and wasn’t holding back. “I spent years doing everything I could to make sure you would have a healthy head full of hair, and you done gone and cut it off!”

“It’s not all gone.” Self-consciously, Melanie smoothed the hair tapered to her neck, still trying to get used to how short it was. “Most of it was cut back here.”

Her unexpected trip to the hair salon to avoid having lunch with Scott had resulted in a drastic transformation in her appearance. For more years than she could remember, she had combed her thick shoulder-length hair back from her face, twisted it into a simple knob and pinned it to the nape of her neck. The style was quick and easy, and more than accommodated her much too busy life.

Now her hair was styled into a sleek bob that was tapered at the neck and symmetrically angled to the front on both sides of her face. The look was topped off with a whiff of bangs. She still wasn’t sure they were age appropriate, but they sure did make her look different.

When the stylist let her assess the creation in the mirror, Melanie couldn’t believe what she was seeing. The woman staring back at her looked nothing like her. She looked so much better.

Melanie had never thought that much about her appearance. When she was a girl, people described her as “cute”, but the meaning of that word had faded over the years as taking care of herself became secondary to taking care of everyone else.

With her limited funds, going to the hair salon had never been an option and the thought of getting a manicure or a pedicure had never occurred to her. Yet, she had spent two hours in an exclusive beauty salon indulging in a form of pampering that she thoroughly enjoyed. Still, her stomach had roiled when she paid the bill. She could have bought groceries for a month for the price of one trip to the Beauty Barn.

When she returned to the store, Azure and Gillian squealed with delight at her makeover. She had to admit that their reaction made the new look worth the price and Miss Emma’s enthusiastic reaction sealed the deal.

“I’m not surprised,” her godmother said giving her a warm hug. “I knew you were a beautiful swan all the time.”

Unfortunately, the praise wasn’t universal. Melanie’s decision to visit her mother and reveal her new look resulted in the confrontation that she had spent the weekend avoiding.

“It’s bad enough that you fightin’ on the public streets with your sister, about some broke down furniture...”

“It wasn’t about that! It’s about her taking that man inside my home...”

“Now you’re shavin’ your head...”

“My hair is cut, Mama, not shaved.”

“What is wrong with you?”

“Nothing!”

“Wanda, Jolene and you used to be as thick as thieves.”

“That’s when we were kids. We haven’t been that close in years.”

“That’s because you decided to go off and do your own thing.
