GRAYSON

I t looks like I’ve earned Ava’s trust. With her three sisters gone, she is happy to eat the rest of her lunch while telling me a little bit more about herself.

“I’m surprised you saw my teaching degree on the wall. Usually, Arabella only highlights her accomplishments when she brings men to the house.”

She’s not wrong. Her sister did her very best to try and avoid talking about any of the other siblings in the Hunter family. “It’s weird, but I have my own pair of eyes. I wasn’t really focused on what she was telling me. I was just taking in your family history through the photos. Do you miss your dad? I see John around New York sometimes, but I never really thought about the family he had back home. Here, I mean.”

Ava shrugs her shoulders, hardly looking phased by the personal question. “He left when mom died because every part of this place reminded him of her, including my sisters and I. Arabella was right that he pays for any bills we have here at the house and the mortgage has long been paid off. I think he sees that as his way of contributing to the family, since he can’t actually physically be here. We visit him at Christmas, but that’s about it. Otherwise, it’s just phone calls and texts a few times a week as needed.”

The more she opens up, the more real she seems.

“Were you serious about what you said about having a business? What brought you here?”

I never really thought about how I was going to explain this to anyone.

When I asked John for a job at his ranch, he asked why and I just told him that I needed some time away from the city. He seemed to accept that answer. But I don’t want to give Ava that same excuse.

“Have you ever felt unmotivated to get up in the morning? Like there’s no reason to go into work or keep doing all the things you need to do?”

“Kind of,” Ava says with a frown. “I don’t feel like my life’s work is to work on this ranch. Some days I just want to quit. I don’t know if I’d say there’s no reason, but I definitely feel unmotivated.”

So she gets it, at least a little bit. She can relate to some of the things I’m feeling. “I felt like I was going through my days too easily, I guess. I didn’t have to work if I didn’t want to, I had people for that. I had the money to pay people to do that. So some days I would just get up and not do anything. I’d just be lazy and do nothing all day. Sometimes I’d be lying on the couch for hours on end, watching television and feeling like a sloth because I never moved unless I was eating or had to use the restroom.”

I don’t know why I feel compelled to tell her my story, but I do. She nods in all the right places and looks genuinely interested.
