Duncan waited until the next morning to take the truck and go into town. For supplies, he said. Andrea suspected he just felt he needed to get away from her for a while.
The idea brought a smile to her face. Ever since his declaration of jealousy, after which heâd barely said two words to her the rest of the evening, sheâd been alternately thrilled and frustrated by her suspicion that Duncan cared for her a great deal more than he wanted to admit.
She was thrilled because she cared for him too. The frustration was, at least in part, because his attitude sometimes made her wonder if he wasnât just like all the other men sheâd ever known, men who always thought they knew what was best for the little woman. After all, he had bullied her into talking about the murder. The fact that doing so did seem to have put a stop to the sleepwalking didnât excuse the harshness of his methods.
Duncan still looked tense when he returned around noon. It probably didnât help that sheâd just stepped out of the shower in the downstairs bath and was wearing nothing but a towel. He took one look at her, plunked the brown paper grocery bag down on the kitchen counter, and headed out again, muttering that he needed to chop more firewood.
Humming, Andrea went upstairs to put on one of the dresses sheâd packed for San Antonio. It was a little lightweight for this climate, but if she went out into the sun, perhaps somewhere just in range of the woodpile, she thought she might soon be quite warm.
On the way there she detoured into the kitchen, meaning to put away the groceries Duncan had brought back from town. To her surprise, she discovered heâd come back inside and taken care of that chore himself. A glance into the refrigerator revealed replenished supplies of bread, milk, and beer. The staples of life, she thought, smiling.
Then she frowned. Hadnât she noticed a smaller paper bag sticking up out of the top of the grocery sack? She was wondering what might have been in it when the crack of a rifle made her jump.
It was a weekday. Hunting had resumed. Sheâd been hearing distant gunshots on and off all morning. She told herself sternly that she ought to be getting used to them by now. They were nothing to worry about . . . unless you were a ruffed grouse or a bobwhite quail.
But this one had been very close and in spite of her resolve, she jumped again with the next explosion of sound, a blast so loud she knew it must have been fired even closer to the camp than the last. Andrea barely had time to register that thought when she heard the unnerving sound of a crash from the direction of the woodpile, followed by a muffled curse from Duncan.
Then there was silence. It was too quiet. Her breath caught as, against her will, she imagined the worst possible scenario.
