By the time they finally left, Clare was nearly undone. The back seat of Mike’s sporty foreign import was filled to bursting with the odious Puddin’ and his accoutrements. Their own suitcases, costume pieces and other sundry belongings were squeezed in alongside, making the interior of his car seem almost unbearably familiar.

His hand brushed against her knee as he threw the vehicle into gear and tore down the road as if the hounds of hell were after him. And if Puddin’s disgruntled growling was any indication, they were. Scarcely braking at the side-street stop signs, he ground from low to high speeds—causing her thigh to burn from his touch—and sailed toward the country fair. Buildings and trees were a blur as he sped from the on ramp, roared over several lanes and merged with traffic on the freeway proper.

Mike draped his hands over the top of his steering wheel and began to relax. He never felt more confident than when he was behind the wheel of a well-tuned car. Not to mention the fact that the sooner he got out of town, the less likely the chance of running into someone he knew, dressed as he was in this idiotic outfit.

Racking his brain for a topic of conversation that wouldn’t reveal his ignorance on the subject of medieval country fairs, Mike opted for what he hoped was safe conversational ground.

“Your mom is great,” he said, sliding an easy sidelong glance at Clare.

She smiled sheepishly. “Yes, she is. Her attachment to her dog takes a little getting used to, though.” Shrugging lightly, she gestured to the back seat. “Sorry about getting stuck with Puddin’. Hopefully he’ll come around.”

“No problem. I’m sure, once we get there, he’ll be fine.”

Puddin’ snorted loudly.

Mike accelerated uneasily at the sound, as if trying to outrun Eva’s little bundle of joy.

“How long until we get there?” Clare asked, trying to divert the subject away from the indignant dog. At the rate they were traveling, surely they would arrive any moment. She had hoped to have some more time to study her notes. Perhaps if she angled her purse just right, she could see Lucy’s flash cards and make a halfway intelligent attempt at discussing something medieval.

“Oh, Happy Valley is about a two-hour drive from Seattle. That’s why I got us a couple of rooms at the bed and breakfast. I didn’t want you to miss any of the action.” He sent her a happy sideways grin.

“Super,” she said, trying to inject a note of carefree enthusiasm into her voice for his benefit. She studied his profile in the morning sunlight. He was so handsome. She still couldn’t believe her good fortune. If only they were on their way to a quiet little picnic for two in the country. Then life would be perfect. Never mind, she decided. She’d count her blessings. At least Mike wasn’t asking her to jump out of a plane, or scale to the top of Mt. Rainier, as Beau, in the throes of his midlife crisis, was wont to do.
