A stone portal opened in the wall. Martha and Daniel climbed a narrow rotten staircase. Daniel stayed close behind the woman. He watched her movements, full of strength and grace.

“What’s that suit you’re wearing?” he asked.

“I received it from the sisters,” she said. “It’s made of the petals of Copper Queen, a special rose. This suit is to protect me. As much as it can.”

“Protect you from what?” asked Daniel. Martha did not answer.

They climbed up to the space under the gloomy vaulted roof of the chapel, which smelled of mildew, dust, and damp wood. At first, Daniel could discern nothing in the darkness. Then there was a light. It came from a roughly cube-shaped block of stone. As they drew closer, Daniel saw that it was an altar. On it, like an offering, lay a long sword that gave off a glow but seemed to be made entirely of copper. The metallic sheen of the weapon and the colors of Martha’s suit harmonized with each other.

Daniel sensed that the ghostly beings were present again. He felt them roaming around the altar, heard their soft whispers.

Martha said, “Over the centuries, the chant of the seven sisters has given shape to this sword. For a long, long time, it remained hidden here. Now it is yours . . . if you choose to have it.”

“Mine?” he asked. “Why? What do you mean?”

“It is yours if you choose to stand with me. If you choose to overcome your fear, and to fight. If you choose to be one of the Eight.”
