CHAPTER 15
Shawn
* * *
The next few days can be best described as cruel and unusual punishment. Rachel and I pass by each other over and over between camp activities, and each time we have to stroll past each other as though nothing at all is going on. It doesnât help that Lexi is watching her like a cat at a mouse hole. Every time the two are anywhere in my vicinity, Lexi is still all over me while Rachel stands awkwardly in the background. Itâs getting harder and harder to try and act casually around Lexi with Rachel standing right there. A few times, Iâve snagged Rachel while she had a moment to herself and it always ends with us kissing furiously and then jumping apart as soon as someone else comes along the path.
Iâm headed back to the dock after coming off of a Music rotation, thinking about whatâs going to happen in the next few days. I think Iâm going to go crazy; the few moments Iâve had with Rachel since that night on the lake havenât been even close to enough. The last time we ran into each other, we ended up in a heap in the bushes. Rachelâs shirt was unbuttoned, her hair was a wild mess and my shirt was halfway off when we heard footsteps and sprung apart. I shake my head as I walk along the trail. If I donât see her soon, I think I might lose my mind.
The thought hasnât even had time to settle in my head before a familiar voice hisses at me from somewhere in the brush.
âRachel?â I say quietly, and I see a flash of dark hair. Grinning, I look around to make sure no one is near and then head into the forest after her. I find her in the shade next to a huge oak tree with spreading branches.
âYou heard me,â she says in a whisper, smiling at me. âI knew youâd be heading back from your Music rotation and Iâm heading to the dock so I figured Iâd try to snag you.â
âAre you stalking me?â I ask, and Rachel starts to laugh and then throws a hand over her mouth.
âNo, you arrogant jerk,â she says in a whisper. âI just wanted to say hi.â
âIs that all?â I ask in a low voice. I take a step toward her and watch her cheeks flush.
âYes,â she whispers. I grab the front of her shirt and pull her toward me. Her eyes light up. I skim my lips across her jawline and her eyelids flutter shut. The sunlight filters in through the oak leaves and dapples her skin. Her mouth finds mine and the frustration of the last few days erupts as our lips connect. Before I know whatâs happening, my hands are in her hair and her back is pressed against the tree. Her hands are gripping my wrists and then sliding their way down my shoulders and her mouth is a fire on mine. A few more moments pass and the rational part of my brain starts flashing an alarm.
