Chapter Ten

My pulse spiked, terror holding me still. Before me, heads vanishing into the roof, was Cardivass, the giant, two-headed dog who guarded the gates to the underworld. I didn’t need Essa to tell me who he was. I remembered the stories from childhood. Cardivass also ate small children who refused to do their chores or go to bed when bidden. That had been a fiction, but it wasn’t a story breathing mouldering breath over me now. Those teeth… I wasn’t a child, but I didn’t doubt he’d make short work of a fully-grown guardian.

The growling continued, but he didn’t come any closer or try to snatch me up in either of his fearsome jaws. I slid a foot behind me and slipped back as gently as I could manage, breathing a sigh of relief when Cardivass retreated out of sight behind the metal wall. It was an illusion of safety – there was no barrier. But now that I couldn’t see him I could relax enough to think properly.

I checked the metal walls, confirming that there was no way out through them. Metal reached high overhead on two sides, with stone at my back and Cardivass in front of me.

Kyann? I blew out a breath of relief when Vashri’s voice echoed in my head.

I’m here. I’m safe. I just need to find a way out, I replied.

We’ll come to you. I just have a … small problem to deal with first.

My lips twitched. My problem’s about twelve feet tall with two mouths full of sharp teeth.

I felt the spike of alarm as the kings heard my comment. Stay where you are, we’ll come get you. That was Fon. I could sense the effort he was exerting, although I couldn’t be sure what he was facing or how he was battling it.

I leaned back against the metal wall. The idea of being rescued was appealing right now, but the kings were clearly facing their own battles. I wasn’t about to sit around adding to their problems.

Slipping to the floor, I shuffled on my knees to the edge of my trap. I made myself as small as possible and peered out. Cardivass was still there, a rumbling growl resounding from his broad chest. But he wasn’t looking in my direction in particular. Could he have forgotten about me?

My eyes were fully accustomed to the dark now, and I inspected my surroundings. There had to be a way out, and I was determined to find it. My little cell was a dead end, but there must be something out in the main chamber. That was massive – big enough to hold the giant dog of legend.

I scanned the walls on the far side of Cardivass. Smooth stone met my gaze, reaching high up until the small windows appeared at the same height as Cardivass’s head if he sat up straight. I wondered if the keep here had been modelled on the Emperor’s citadel. It looked to be about as easy to get in and out of.
