ONCE BACK inside his flat, Darren breathed a sigh of relief as he closed the door behind them.

“Thanks for the rescue,” Hank told him as he dropped onto the settee.

“I felt it was about to turn… intense.” Darren smiled as he sat beside Hank. “Hopefully, that answered your questions.”

“Sort of. I still don’t know about this ritual ya guys do. Do you put on green robes and dance around a fire, or what?”

Darren smiled crookedly. “Nothing that elaborate, or quite so silly. We tune the watches to emit a specific tone, then chant and hum along with the sound. My supposition is, the watches are doing more than just making the noises, but that’s all we are really aware of.”

Hank nodded at the answer. “But I still don’t know what in the hell y’all expect me to do. I don’t think I’m that Prodigal guy yer looking for.”

Darren grasped Hank’s right hand. He could feel the warmth of the Claddagh ring’s metal band against his palm. He caught Hank’s gaze. “To be completely honest, I’m not as certain about this as Anne seems to be. Yet, my opinion may not be worth much. I haven’t studied the ancient histories to quite the degree my sister has.” Darren smiled warmly. “I can say, I don’t expect anything from you, other than for you to be true to yourself.”

“Well….” Hank sighed, sounding full of doubt. “I don’t know if I should even tag along to this thing.”

Darren wanted him to “tag along,” if for no other reason than to provide moral support, but he didn’t feel right trying to force Hank into accompanying them if he decided against it. He gave Hank’s hand a gentle squeeze before he stood and pulled the other man to his feet. “Let me show you something,” he explained as he led Hank across the great room. “Go get your jacket and I’ll take you to the Shamrock Green.”

“Where?” Hank asked as he went into the kitchen.

“It’s the private green, like a garden, for the estate.”
