CHAPTER EIGHT

The Fight

A few minutes later, Corinne found herself sitting again, her arms folded onto the tops of her knees. She stared at the floor and pondered the meaning of Megan’s words. What could she do to stop Megan’s mother? She was so lost in thought that she didn’t notice Madelyn, dressed in functional jeans and a T-shirt, walk up behind her.

“Hi, Madelyn, why aren’t you dressed?” Corinne asked.

Madelyn fidgeted with her hands. “You never did it, did you?” she said, angrily.

Corinne stared. “Huh?”

Madelyn slumped. “You never listen! Any time I’ve talked to you this week, your mind’s been somewhere else.”

“I’m sorry. What are we talking about?”

Madelyn straightened her back again. “Last Monday, You said you’d ask Aleksis about the monster.”

Corinne stood, but even then Madelyn was half of a head taller. “It slipped my mind.”

“That was five days ago!” Madelyn said as she slapped her hand on the table.

Guilt punched Corinne in the gut. “Oh yeah. I’m so sorry. I forgot.”

“But you promised.” Tears glistened in Madelyn’s eyes.

There was only one way Corinne could think of to make it up to her. “I asked him about his Hunt earlier tonight. He said he’d narrowed it down to a couple different factories. I’m sure we could go talk to him and get more info.”

Madelyn glared at her. “No, I don’t want any more help from you.” Tears streaming down her face, she raced out of the hall.

Corinne stared at the door for a several minutes before leaping out of the chair and running after her.

***

Corinne flew out the door of the dance hall and ran straight to the cabin. She needed to talk to Madelyn, to make it right. Unfortunately, when she opened the door to the cabin, unsettling quiet greeted her. All the other girls were having fun at the dance. She glimpsed a light snaking out of the door in her old room.

Not hesitating, Corinne dashed to the door. As she cracked it open, she froze as she glimpsed Megan and Sarah sitting on Madelyn’s old bed. They looked up, their faces radiating resentment.

“Well, this can’t be good.” Corinne mumbled to herself. “Oh sorry, I’m looking for someone else.” She tried to close the door as quickly as she could.

“You!” Megan snarled. She charged the door and slammed it open.

Corinne shuffled backward just in time to avoid getting hit by the door. “I’m just looking for my friend—”

Sarah cut her off. “We don’t care about your stupid friend. She’s even more worthless than you are.”

Corinne’s face flushed with anger. Making fun of her was one thing, but not her friends.

“What’s your problem?” she asked.

Megan smiled with her expensively perfect teeth. “Oh look, the pwiddy widdle girl has feelings.”

Corinne’s nostrils flared. “Look, you want to make fun of me, that’s fine. I can take it. Madelyn’s off limits.”

“Aw, now the widdle girl’s sticking up for her fwiend.” Madelyn and Sarah laughed. “Isn’t that cute?”

Corinne had had enough. “Better a cute little girl than a stuck-up floozy.”

Megan pushed Corinne so hard that she flew backward.
