CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE

Colton taps a single tattooed knuckle against my window again, and something in my chest pinches. This is eerily similar to the first time I laid eyes on him at the rest stop all those weeks ago.

He makes a circular motion with his finger for me to roll down the window. I raise my bloody palm. Not going to happen.

Colton’s brows draw together and in the blink of an eye, he’s ripped open my door and has my hand in his. He peels off the saturated paper towel, and I flinch as portions of it tug at the wound.

With his free hand, he swings my legs out of the car and crouches between them for a better look, one of his hands staying on the back of my knee, gripping me tighter than necessary. “Danny told me you cut yourself,” he offers with a quick glance, as if that explains why he’s here.

“Do you have some sort of medical background I don’t know about? Or are all lawyers trained in first aid?” I ask, trying to sound composed while my pulse pounds in my temples.

“No, but I used to fight a lot.” He looks up at me through his thick lashes and points to a faint white scar over his eyebrow. “Had to learn to patch myself up.”

“Oh.” I find myself wanting to reach out and touch the scar, to brush the hair away from his forehead and search for others.

I don’t. Obviously.

“There is a first aid kit at the office. I can clean this out and close it up, if you’ll let me?”

I nod and climb out of my car. He holds my uninjured hand for a few feet before he lets it fall, fisting and flexing his fingers at his side.

It’s like a kick to the stomach. Maybe last night wasn’t as good for him as it was for me—

No, stop.

It was a one-night stand, the only thing that’s important is that I had a good time, and I did. Judging by the satisfied ache in my body, Colton also had a good time. I need to stop ruining it by overanalyzing. I wipe my good hand on my jeans and mentally erect a flimsy wall between us.

We cross the street and head toward the brewery. My pulse kicks up a beat. I must have stared at the Dovetail sign a thousand times from the window at Maggie’s, but I’ve never once considered heading over to check it out. Come to think of it, I’ve never actually seen anyone go in, but since it shares a parking lot with The Pack, maybe I just didn’t notice?

My eyes drift to Colton’s shoulders. I know he said that he works for Jack, but it seems odd for an attorney to work out of a place that makes beer.

Throughout the short walk, Colton stays a pace or two ahead. I’m concentrating so hard on being nonchalant about our post-hookup interaction that I only realize we’re headed toward The Pack, and not Dovetail, when we’re walking through the front door.
