A few hours later, Cade and I take a ride to the local supermarket. It’s not far, but the drive is awkwardly quiet. I’m not sure if it’s because I saw him practically naked or if I’m just imagining it. Trevor and I didn’t talk much – at least, I didn’t talk first.
It wasn’t always like that and I’m not sure how it got that way.
I just remember asking something without being prompted once and receiving a backhand across the cheek. Ever since then, I spoke only when spoken to.
Maybe that’s why I haven’t uttered a word.
We pull into the parking lot and Cade finds an open spot. “You alright?” he asks as he puts the car in park.
“Fine,” I answer…but honestly, I’m not sure.
I didn’t think I’d feel anxious about being out – like I’m doing something wrong. But, I’m not. I’m free of Trevor, and I can do whatever I please.
I need to push my ridiculous fears aside and enjoy doing something I want to do.
As we walk toward the entrance, he asks, “Is there anything particular you want?”
I think about this while I get a shopping cart. “Maybe a bottle of wine?”
“You can have anything your heart desires,” he hums next to my ear. His warm breath sends chills down my spine. The thought of having anything I want…
“Maybe some potato chips. Those weren’t allowed.” I cut myself short. I don’t want to hash up old memories – I want to create new ones.
“Well,” he coaxes. “You can have chips, or ice cream, or whatever junk food you want. In fact, I encourage it.” He gives me a gentle hip check and steals the cart out from under me, then makes a sharp right turn down the chip aisle. Shaking my head, I follow.
As I turn, I witness him grabbing random bags and tossing them into the cart. Bag after bag, after bag. I finally catch up to him and stand in front of the cart so he can’t continue his raid of crunchy empty calories. Facing him, I catch his face frozen in a huge smile, and his eyes are laughing.
“What?” he asks, all innocent. My smile matches his, and soon I’m giggling.
“I can’t eat all of this, even if I wanted to,” I say between laughing fits.
“Who says this is all for you? Maybe I’m feeding a tribe of chip starved children?” He lifts a brow, and my laughter becomes howls.
I can’t stop.
I’m crying I’m laughing so hard – and it’s something I haven’t done in years.
It’s an amazing feeling to let go and not worry about consequences.
Pulling the cart backward, he turns and races back down the aisle. “To the cookie aisle!” he roars, then turns left.
For the next ten minutes, we play hide and seek through the grocery store. He dashes down rows of junk food while I try and find which aisle he’s running down. When he finally stops and I catch up to him, the cart is overflowing. “Don’t you think we need real food?” I ask out of breath.
