Chapter 15

I get to Shards and I strut in like I own the place. My pockets are full of currents and my shelly man is waiting. And my little-one. I’ll get the chocolate later. Right now I need my helpers.

I get to the back of the shop but I still don’t see anyone, not even the shop hands. I feel like a freaker and that’s bad. I’ve never felt like a freaker before.

“Hey boss lady,” I hear from behind. I spin around and there he is, my favorite beast: dark brown hair, cut short on top and shaved even shorter on the sides, a light beard and a dark tan, sharp blue eyes and a slightly arrogant smile.

And the body of a toxie god.

And now he has the clothes to fit the man.

He turns all the way around, slowly, lusciously, showing himself to me. “Classic?”

He looks like one of the gents at a dancing fair, only taller and stronger. His white, collared shirt is simple and elegant. His dark pants are tight but not too tight. They show off his follow-up and his powerful gams. I can see the silhouette of his goose, now, too.

“Do you approve?” he asks.

“I approve,” I say. And I feel so much better. That overwhelming sense that somehow I just killed a real man in a real bathroom in the real 1980s is gone. It was stupid, I know. I knew it then, but somehow that didn’t fix it.

“Where’s my little-one?” I ask.

Zolo points to the dressing rooms and I walk over to them. Only one has feet beneath the doors, so I knock. “Hello? Evo? Do you have a surprise for me?”

“I look twirby,” he pouts. “I look like I’m playing richie. I’m not richie. I can’t even read.”

“You’re my little-one and I’m sure you look glorious,” I say, and I mean it. He’s my little brother, now. For the rest of the pop, that’s who he is. “Come on out. We have to get some chocolate and find a woman, remember?”

He opens the door very slowly and steps out. He looks up at me like a boy who just set the barn on fire. So sad, so apologetic. “Sorry. I’m goop.”

I hug him so hard he lifts up into the air. I set him back down and beam. He’s wearing a green and blue plaid sweater-vest, sandy slacks and black loafers. It’s perfect. I think he’s the cutest thing I’ve ever seen.

“Please don’t kiss me,” he trembles. “I’m saving myself to be tied.”

I laugh so hard I think I’m going to cry. Or leak myself. Zolo starts laughing too, then Evo. I can tell he doesn’t want to, but he can’t help it.

“I guess these are working out for you?” a clerk says. He’s a man but he sounds like a woman. He’s obviously same-same, but that’s no big. Captain Aschuul says it used to be, though. People got killed and thrown in the cage for being same-same. Now nobody cares. Dads don’t
