Chapter 17

The morning would soon turn into afternoon and Nickie still hadn't answered Duncan's calls. Each time he checked his phone, it still held the original message. Can't talk right now. I'll call you later.

Duncan parked his Audi across the street from the station.

"You want me to wait here?" Andy said from the passenger seat.

"Whichever you prefer."

Andy shrugged and got out. The rain was starting and made the gravel dust stick to the bottom of their shoes. "This is smart, brother. We have plenty of time to make the drive."

Andy was right, but Duncan didn't give him the satisfaction of agreement since he would have told Nickie about Leslie Jacobsen before they left anyway.

Nickie would insist on coming with them. It was too dangerous. He didn't like it.

As they entered the ground floor of the police station, he shook the droplets from his coat, then headed for screening. Keys, coins, phone in the bin. Metal detector, then reverse the process. Andy followed in silence as they made their way to the elevator. Arriving at Leslie's place of residence was going to be risky, but since he and Andy had already infiltrated her office, that option was too dangerous.

The elevator doors barely opened before Duncan sensed something was happening. From his vantage point, he could see Nickie's, Lynx's and the captain's offices. Each was dark. No one questioned his presence. Had he and Nickie been together so long that no one questioned his presence? So, he kept walking with Andy next to him as if they knew where they were going, which Duncan had a hunch he did.

Officer Parker stood outside one of the interrogation rooms. He turned his head as soon as Duncan and Andy rounded the corner. Damn, Parker was tall. He stood ramrod straight, but rotated his head enough to nod at the question on Duncan's face.

Duncan held out his hand. "Hello, Officer. This is my brother, Andy. Andy... Officer Parker."

"Good to meet you, sir."

"No sir necessary. Just Andy. Thanks."

They shook and Duncan forced himself not to wince at the grip. "Is she in there?"

"Yes, sir."

He wouldn't correct him for the 'sir,' but it was disconcerting, especially since they'd shared drinks at The Pint together in the past.

"I'm afraid she can't be bothered."

"Of course. I was hoping we might step into the observation room."

Parker looked pained but stepped in front of the small glass panel looking into the interrogation room. "Detective Lynx, Captain Nolan and Assistant District Attorney Vaughn are all in there. I suppose they'll tell you if you're not allowed."

"I suppose they will. Thank you for your time."

They didn't knock. Duncan honestly wasn't sure if he would be allowed. It didn't hurt that Andy's wife was the captain's stepdaughter.

The captain spotted him first. "Duncan," he said in a low voice. "Come on in. She just started."

All Duncan heard through the one-way speaker was rustling papers. Duncan had no idea who she just started with, but didn't question.

"Is that Andy?" Dave asked. "Come in. We'll find room."

The disgusted look on Lynx's face was satisfying to say the least.
