Anna

I’m grateful for the hot showers I’ve been taking ever since I got here. Sliding out of the tub, I dress quickly and make my way downstairs. I slept well last night. And just like the night before, at some point, I sensed a presence towering over me and staring down at me with dark eyes like those of a raven. I wasn’t scared. If anything, I felt completely safe.

Walking into the kitchen, I find Laura pouring coffee into a mug. Her eyes widen the moment she sees me, and she grins.

“Good morning, you’re up early today,” she says, motioning for me to take a seat at the table.

I smile and have a seat. She places the coffee mug in front of me and grabs another empty one from the top shelf. She pours some coffee into it and sits across from me.

My cheeks turn a shade pinker as embarrassment coils around me. Not because she was the one to groom me and get me ready for the monster to take me. But because she saw me in the most vulnerable state I’ve ever been in, with blood running down my thighs and tears rolling down my cheeks.

I drop my gaze to my mug as the memory assaults me.

“How do you feel today?” she asks softly, and my eyes flit to hers full of pity for me.

“I’m okay. Thank you for yesterday,” I blurt out, and she frowns.

“I didn’t do anything.”

“You... tried to be there for me,” I croak. “I’m not used to people trying to be there for me, and I was cold to you.”

She smiles and cups my hand.

“I don’t like how he hurt you. I truly apologize for not being able to help you.”

“It’s not your fault,” I say and take a sip from my cup. I don’t want to talk about what happened. She must sense my discomfort because she decides to change the subject.

“Do you have family members?” she asks, and I grin as the image of my sisters in the kitchen laughing and blabbing as they make dinner crosses my mind.

“I have sisters. Plenty of them. They all live in Russia.” Except for Tiana, I have no idea where she is, but it’s a story I’m not ready to open up about.

“That’s amazing. How about parents?”

My smile slips a notch.

“They exist.” I say quickly and take another sip of coffee from my cup. When she doesn’t say anything back, I decide to speak.

“What’s your job exactly?”

“I take care of admin stuff. I make sure employees are getting paid and sometimes help Andrew out with anything that he needs.”

“Have you ever seen him?”

“Who?”

I swallow hard.

“Master Dean.”

“I did once. Very briefly though as he was leaving the house. Mind you, this man never leaves the east wing. He doesn’t like to talk to people; he's pretty much an antisocial guy.”

“Does he have a scar? Is he ugly?”

She chuckles.

“A scar? I don’t know, but from what I saw he didn’t look bad. I didn’t really speak to
