Chapter 23

Danielle

My phone hums against the wooden nightstand. Shaking off the sleepy haze, I open my eyes noting that Sebastian’s side of the bed is still cold. Throat clenched with longing, I rub my hand over the still smooth sheet. It’s been two days, and whatever forced him back to the city early still has his attention. He hasn’t even come home to sleep. My phone continues its violent assault on the oak, and I reluctantly roll over to answer. Not bothering to look, I slide my finger across the screen and answer with a raspy hello.

“Still sleeping, princess?” His voice is distant, the wear of whatever he’s dealing with evident with every word.

“I was. I’m not now. How much longer are you planning on sleeping at the office, Sebastian?”

“Hopefully, that was the last night.” He sighs, exhaustion taking over him. “I think I’ve just about got things handled here.”

“I miss you.”

“I miss you too, princess. You have no idea how much.”

“Then come home. I still have a few hours before I have to get ready for work.”

“Danielle, if I could you know I would. There’s no place in the world I’d rather be right now than in your arms.”

“Yeah…” I drift off, biting my lip to hold back the tears.

“Princess, I know you’re hurt and I’m killing myself over that. I think about you lying awake at night staring at an empty spot in the bed next to you, and something inside of me goes hallow. I hate doing this to you. If there was any other way, I would take it, but—”

“I get it, Sebastian,” I butt in, stopping him before I break. “Sometimes dating a powerhouse means having dinner alone, or waking up in an empty bed. You can’t help it. No matter how much it hurts, it’s something I’m going to have to get used to if I want to be with you. I’m trying…”

“So you’re not mad anymore?”

Pulling the blankets up around my shoulders, I sigh. “No, hotshot. I’m not mad anymore. I’ll admit, I’m still not happy about you abandoning me on your family vacation, but I get it. You did what you had to do. I just wish you’d give yourself a break sometimes. Surely, everything won’t fall apart if you take the extra time to have one dance with your girlfriend.”

“I wish that were true,” he replies, his voice cracking as a faint cough comes from the background. “Listen, I love you, but I gotta go.”

“I love you too, Sebastian. Please try to come home tonight.”

“I’ll give it my best shot, Princess.”

My heart aching right out of my chest, I clutch my phone and stare up at the ceiling. The only good thing about this latest absence is that Sebastian’s finally realizing the need to keep me in the know. Once I was finally able to stop fuming enough to decide what to do about being abandoned in the Hamptons, I called to let him know I was coming back to the city.
