Chapter Sixteen

Though Faith knew Phoenix was there to protect her, the cold hand of terror had clutched her heart. Try as she might she couldn’t pull her eyes away from the evil man towering over her. The bank sloped upward, and wearing leather from head to foot, his long hair pulled back in a ponytail and a black bandana wrapped around his head, Ford looked bigger than life. Afraid to speak or move, all she could do was stare up in fright. Sneering, he took a step toward her, but Phoenix lunged forward and placed himself in front of her. Letting out a menacing growl, then snarling viciously with saliva dripping from his mouth, he warned Ford to back away.

Ford paused.

“You’d better get that mangy watchdog to back off or I’ll do something nasty to him. Really nasty.”

Though she wanted to yell back at him, her heart was racing so fast she could barely breathe, let alone speak.

“Hey! Faith! You deaf?” Ford shouted. “I told you to—”

“Looks like we got here just in time!”

Flooded with relief and joy, she spun around as Hunter strode purposefully toward her, a large, muscled, reddish-brown wolf at his side.

“You’re outnumbered, Ford,” Hunter continued. “Give it up.”

“Nah, I don’t think so. I’ve got this!”

Darting her eyes back to him, Faith’s heart sank as Ford removed his leather jacket and tossed it aside. He was wearing a shoulder holster, and slowly lifting the gun from its holder, he pointed it directly at Hunter.

“No, Ford! Don’t!” she shrieked. “Don’t! Please!”

“Finally she speaks,” Ford declared sarcastically. “About fucking time. I think I’ll shoot the furry pets first, then I’ll take down your boyfriend. Let’s see, where does that leave us? Oh, yeah, you’ll be all alone. My lucky day! I’ve got plans for you, Faith. So many plans!”

“Ford, don’t you get it? My pack is all around you,” Hunter warned, marching forward and praying he sounded believable.

Faith knew Hunter was too far away to pounce, and even if he could get close enough, he couldn’t stop a bullet! To make matters worse, she was under no illusion the pack was near. She’d heard the lie in Hunter’s voice, and all she could do was pray Ford hadn’t detected it too.

“If you try to hurt any of us,” Hunter continued, “my wolves will be on top of you before you can blink. You know how quick a pack can attack. You won’t stand a chance. They’ll rip you to shreds. You may have a gun, but you won’t be able to kill them all.”

“Stop right there!” Ford shouted, waving his weapon. “Don’t come a step closer.”

“I wasn’t walking up to you. I just wanted to get closer to Faith.”

“Hah. The great one’s dying wish. Maybe I’ll let you enjoy your last few minutes with the bitch, but then... no! Maybe not. Hey, Faith, I’m going to kill that snarling creature in front of you and take you as a shield. The pack won’t attack me while I’ve got you! Did you hear what I said, Faith? The creature in front of you.
