Hailey

Three weeks passed with similar results. She would attend his games, meet up with him after, and they would kiss, hold hands, and head to the car. Now that a routine had been established and expectations had been outlined, it was easy to fall into the role of doting, supportive girlfriend.

And Rudd was a surprisingly attentive boyfriend.

She wasn’t quite sure what she expected when it came to Rudd and what he might be like entangled with someone else, and while Hailey knew they weren’t really together so this probably wasn’t the whole truth, she realized that he wouldn’t be so bad, once someone looked past the prickly parts of his personality.

“Can I ask you a question?” she asked, twisting in the front seat of the car to look at him.

Rudd always insisted he drive, even if he was tired or sore or both, even after an exhausting game or an intense practice. She didn’t think it was some male-macho bullshit; she thought he generally liked driving her places, and since Hailey wasn’t comfortable driving around at night, she was more than happy to let him take up that responsibility.

“In the past few weeks of getting to know you, I’ve come to discover you’re going to ask whatever you want, so there’s no point in asking to ask when you’re going to ask it anyway,” he said without looking at her.

She rolled her eyes, pushing his shoulder. “I’m being serious.”

“I am, too.”

She sighed. “I was going to ask you when your last serious relationship was, but now, I don’t even know if you’ve had one,” she muttered, settling back into her seat.

There was a moment of silence between the two of them. Hailey let her eyes close as exhaustion took over her. She wasn’t sleeping as well as she would have liked, and while she wanted nothing more than to blame her fear of Pat discovering the two of them, she knew that that would be a lie. This had nothing to do with Pat and everything to do with the man sitting next to her.

“High school.”

Hailey opened one eye and glanced over at Rudd, unsure if she had heard him or if she was just imagining things.

When Hailey didn’t say anything, Rudd looked back at her and the two locked eyes before he refocused on the road ahead of him.

“High school?” she asked, wanting to make sure she heard him correctly.

He nodded. “High school.” He shrugged. “Although, I’m not sure if three months constitutes as serious. But yeah. That was my last one.”

“What happened?” she asked.

Rudd shrugged again, though Hailey noticed a sharpness to his glance she couldn’t quite explain. “Oh, you know,” he said. “We started to get serious. I wasn’t ready for…for what that meant, and she wasn’t going to wait around for me. I couldn’t blame her for that, so she broke up with me.”

“Hmm.”

“What? No judgment? Nothing you want to say about it?”

She held up her hands. “Whoa, this isn’t about me,” she said. “I’m not here to judge you -”

“Actually, that’s exactly why you’re here, isn’t it?” he asked.
