Chapter Nine

Oh God—the temptation burned hot.

And she was an adult—she could easily say yes. Adults did this sometimes—sex without planning, sex without questions or worries or fears. Maybe that would give her the closure she’d never quite gotten from him.

But she did have fears. And worries, and questions.

And that was when she heard herself say, “I can’t. I have to go. I can’t do this with you.”

And just like that, she pulled away, got to her feet, and started down the bleacher steps as fast as she could go without falling. She was running away from him again, acutely aware that it bore a stark similarity to running away from him at the orchard ten years ago.

That first day at his house, she’d been so sure she would never run from him again, so sure she would never let herself react that way to him again. But she couldn’t make a quick exit—it was a stadium, after all, and there was a long way to go. And the distance made walking calmly feel impossible, too long and drawn out of an escape for a moment she needed to bring to an end, and that was where the running took over.

The difference being—back then she’d been running from him because he didn’t want her anymore.

Now it was because he did and that scared her almost as much as losing him had.
