Later that night, after Dane had returned from taking Bryn home, Truck met him in the kitchen. Everyone else had settled in for the night. Hollywood and Kassie were in one guest room and Fletch had taken the other. The rest of the guys were sleeping wherever there was room…they were used to bunking in all kinds of conditions, so the floor or couch at Dane’s house was almost luxurious compared to, say, the jungle floor.

Everything was quiet and still when Dane returned.

“She get in all right?” Truck asked.

“Yeah. She’s good,” Dane told him.

“I like her.”

“Good.”

“No, Fish. I like her,” Truck reiterated.

“What the fuck, man?” Dane asked, crossing his arms over his chest. “Don’t you have enough on your plate with Mary?”

Truck didn’t get offended, instead he chuckled. “I don’t mean I want her for myself. I only meant that I think she’s absolutely perfect for you.”

“How do you figure?”

“She’ll keep you on your toes. You are not a man who does well with being bored. I mean, you’re living in the middle of nowhere Idaho with nothing to do. You’re used to being in the thick of things. I’ve been worried about you wallowing and sinking deeper into your head. She won’t let you do that.”

Dane didn’t want to grin, but couldn’t help it when his lips curled up anyway. “No, she won’t,” he agreed.

“Right. So I like her,” Truck repeated.

“She’s quirky,” Dane said.

“Didn’t miss that, Fish. Again, she’s exactly what you need.”

“I agree. She makes me feel good. Like I can breathe again.” He looked down and shook his head. “Now I gotta tell Akilah she was right.”

“About what?”

“She told me the night of Fletch and Emily’s wedding that when I went to where the land fed my soul, I’d find a woman who doesn’t see what’s missing, but instead sees me.”

“Smart kid,” Truck commented.

“I shouldn’t like it so much.”

“What?”

“Looking out for Bryn. Being protective of her,” Dane said. “It makes me feel as if I have a purpose again. Making sure she eats. Gets home all right. Isn’t doing any research that can get her into trouble.”

Truck put his hand on Fish’s shoulder. “It’s the kind of men we are. It’s what we do. We look after those we love. Make sure they get what they need. We stand behind them, keeping watch, so they can blossom.”

“What if she gets tired of me doing that for her?”

“Sometimes you gotta be sneaky about it. Make her depend on you so much that she can’t imagine her life without you in it,” Truck said matter-of-factly, dropping his hand.

Dane looked at the man who’d saved his life for a long moment before asking, “Is that what you’re doing?”

“Tryin’,” he said immediately. “But I have a feeling it’ll work out for you long before it does me.”

“Thanks for not making me feel like as asshole for wanting to protect her…even if it’s from herself.”

“You’re not an asshole, Fish. You’re a man who’s found the purpose of his life. Life
