Chapter Eleven

SHE was fading by lunchtime. She could feel it. Only to be expected after such an emotional rollercoaster over the space of twenty-four hours, added to the fact that her sleep pattern was now officially messed up.

Over a pot of tea Eamonn had laid out his plan, attempting to be masterful along the way. Which Colleen appreciated. She did. But at the same time it had been a long, long time since anyone had felt the need to take care of her. And she wasn’t sure she was entirely comfortable with it from him…

Especially after his brief kiss.

When he had started to speak again she had found it hard to meet his gaze, despite their moment of laughter. Because the little voice in the back of her head that she had ignored during the whole Adrian debacle had been shouting loud and clear. It was her warning bell. And she now knew better than to ignore it again. What it had been telling her was that she knew what she had felt as a teenager with a starry-eyed crush might have grown less starry-eyed, but it hadn’t disappeared completely. Colleen didn’t doubt that for a minute. But she was astounded that he would even try. And on her behalf.

‘You need to concentrate on looking after yourself.’ He pointed a long finger at her stomach. ‘And that baby in there. That’s your priority right now. I can look after everything else.’

‘But the finances—’

He interrupted her again, and Colleen started to get pretty annoyed with that. Only afterwards would she see it as his way of trying to lay down the law, to be in control. Which she would later admit was sweet. Kind of. In a very male way.

‘Now, you’re on my turf with that problem.’ He smiled. ‘That I can fix.’

Words which brought her out of passive, understanding mode. ‘I won’t let you pour your money into this place. You worked hard for that money, and it’s hardly like you’re made of the stuff!’

His eyes sparkled at her in amusement. Which irritated the hell out of her. Was he babying her now? Was that his way of dealing with everything she had told him? Because if patronising her like a child who had made naïve
