CHAPTER SIXTEEN
I sit bolt upright choking on all the screams stuck in my throat. Arms wrap around my waist to hold me still as the truck swerves into the opposite lane. Grunts sound from the backseat, and a loud thump comes from the bed of the truck. “Hanna, Hanna, you’re okay. It was just a dream,” Adam assures me until he sees the fresh bruise in the shape of a handprint forming on my upper arm. “Wasn’t it?”
Even though I can see well enough, my hand flies to my eye anyway to make sure it’s still there. I sigh so deeply, it has Adam looking at me strangely.
“Geez, Hanna. What the hell? Are you trying to give me a heart attack and kill us all?” Will clutches at his heart, his chest heaving in and out, and then he too notices the new bruise. His eyes jerk to my face. “Was it Blondie? I mean Jasper, or whatever in the hell we’re calling him now.”
“Yeah.”
From the backseat, Jared places a hand on my shoulder. Surprised, I jump, then latch onto his hand like I’m hanging on for dear life. I shift as best as I can to not jostle my arm too much so I can see his face. His eyes are haunted, the once bright green clouded with too many things to comprehend. Something broke in him today, but underneath the despair I can still see him struggling to fight, if only for me. I squeeze his hand before letting go to turn back to the front.
My eyeball (thankfully still where it belongs) throbs in tandem with the new ache in my arm while my thoughts race circles around Blondie. Leftover panic from Blondie’s little visit to my nightmares crawls along my spine, and I start to search the scenery rushing by outside the windows for the off chance he might be out there somewhere, waiting to tip this vehicle over too, just so he can finish what he started in gouging out my eye. I don’t see anything, but not seeing anything is just as bad as seeing something, and therefore does nothing at all to ease the massive amounts of fear pumping through my veins.
“Are we almost there?” I blurt out. “Please say we’re almost there. To the place you say is safe.”
“Yeah.” Startled by my outburst, Will eyeballs me with a seriously Hanna, what the hell? expression on his face as he rights the truck—once again—back into the correct lane. “Just calm down. We’ll be there in less than five minutes.”
I nod. I want to relax at knowing this. I want to breathe a sigh of relief. I want to feel like I’m okay, but I don’t. The disturbing state of Blondie’s shredded face and gaping eye socket won’t leave my thoughts, the feel of his thumb shoved into my eye, and his hand crushing my arm into oblivion still prevalent. It’s like I’m still stuck there, locked inside my head with him torturing me with very real results.
