{ Chapter 19 }

Mason

What the fuck was I thinking? I should have never let my emotions, primarily my jealousy, get the better of me. I had no right staking any claim to Lila. I should have kept my dick in my pants, and myself out of her bedroom. The whole time she was gone, I did nothing but pace around my goddamn house, waiting for her to come home. Picturing myself inside her was what prompted me to enter her bedroom in the first place. I never intended to do what I did. I only wanted to be in her space, to feel closer to her. But as soon as she walked into the room and I saw her smeared lipstick, I lost it. Internally.

I lost the war inside myself.

I fucked up.

Selfish.

That’s what it was and now I have to find a way out of it.

I’d hardly slept a wink, and I couldn’t prolong the inevitable any longer. Waking very early, I left her bed. She looked so peaceful; I hated what I had to do. I don’t know what’s going to happen after today. Maybe she would leave. But then again, every single time I’d thought she was going to disappear from my life, she surprised the shit right out of me, giving into whatever crazy demands I’d made just so she could keep her job.

I was an even bigger asshole than I had thought.

What I had put the poor girl through was inexcusable, even for me.

It was Sunday and I was sure I wasn’t going to see her for quite some time, so I locked myself away in my office, trying to get some last-minute work done. After about two hours, I was ready to shut my computer down when my cell rang. Turning it over, I saw the number I dreaded. Ignoring the call wasn’t smart, but I couldn’t deal with that shit so early.

I was in the kitchen a few minutes later but I could still hear it ringing, over and over again. I had to answer sooner or later or there would be consequences. Enough was enough. I had to find a way out of my Hell and do it soon.

Rounding my desk, I snatched the intrusive device and flipped it open.

“Hello,” I growled.

There was silence, but only for a few prolonged seconds. “How many times do we have to have the same fucking conversation? You know better than to not answer your phone, Maxwell. What the fuck are you playing at?”

“I didn’t hear it ringing,” I lied. “Sue me.”

“You wish that’s all I would do to you. You need to stop fucking around. You’re getting sloppy, man.”

“What do you want?” My patience had run out a long time before, and the sooner I could get him off the phone the better.

“We have a special job for you,” his gruff voice sounded over the phone.

“Fine, text me the directions.”

“This is not within driving distance. Your expertise is required in Mexico. I’ll send you the information.” There was another silent pause over the line before he continued speaking.
