Chapter Twelve

Ari got back to the cabin and explained her run-in with Drexler. “I’m going to lie low for the rest of the day, go over my notes, see if I can come at this from a different angle.”

She was still getting settled when Phoebe announced she was about to go crazy from cabin fever - “Literally a cabin, in this case...” - and Ari reluctantly agreed that she could take a walk. She didn’t think Corbett was gunning for her. She truly believed Penny had been killed because of what she’d seen rather than what she’d dug up about their mother. He didn’t have any reason to kill Phoebe. She took her phone with her and promised that she would be back in an hour. Dale said she was going to take a nap and, a moment after she went into the bedroom, Ari shut down the computer and followed her.

Dale had already taken off her sweater, standing by the bed in her bra and her arms still tangled in the sleeves. Her hair was wild from the static, and Ari stepped close and smoothed it down.

“Everything okay?”

“Yeah. I’m not supposed to be investigating that case anyway, and we have an hour before our houseguest gets back.”

Dale smiled and tossed her sweater down. She wrapped her now-free arms around Ari’s neck and smiled as she leaned in for a kiss. “Back to the vacation?”

“If you want.” Ari bumped her nose against Dale’s and then kissed her. Dale moaned and reached back to unfasten her bra. Ari started to unbutton her own shirt, but Dale stopped her. “What?”

“I want you dressed while I’m naked.”

Ari smiled. “That’s an unusual request...”

Dale stroked Ari’s fingers. “Even before we were together, you were naked with me a lot. The wolf, the massages. It meant a lot to me, that you were letting yourself be so vulnerable. So just this once, take off my clothes, but leave yours on.” She looked down at the catch of Ari’s pants. “I mean, we can undo buttons and zippers for access, but...”

Ari silenced her with a kiss and undid her pants, slipping them down with her underwear. Dale stepped out of them and laughed as she was dumped onto the bed, her legs lifted into the air so Ari could peel off her socks. Ari kissed each ankle and eased her legs apart. Dale grabbed the collar of Ari’s shirt and pulled her down, kissing her as Ari settled comfortable between her legs.

“You okay?” Ari whispered between kisses.

“Why do you taste like pork chops?”

“I stopped for lunch.”

“After the breakfast I got you?”

Ari moaned. “If you’re worried about the calories, I have a good idea how to work some of them off.” She kissed Dale’s grin, and Dale put her hands in Ari’s hair as she lifted her hips to meet Ari’s. The bed creaked under them, and Ari moved her lips to Dale’s ear. She whispered to her, nipped her earlobe, and slid her hands down Dale’s sides to hold onto her hips as they moved against each other.
