Our flight arrived in Malta the next evening. We found the hotel in one of the old tourist areas, now half empty. I picked up an old tourist guide in the foyer and sat flicking through it as Gracie chatted to her cousin on reception. He kept glancing over in my direction, which was oddly unnerving. After a few minutes, Gracie turned and gave me the thumbs up before vanishing into a back room with him.

I looked round at the peeling paint and cracked plaster. As far as I could tell, there weren’t many other guests here. I began to wonder if this place was even open. But then Gracie returned clutching a room key and grinning broadly. I guessed she’d succeeded in tapping her cousin for cash.
