Sabrina and Spencer had taken to showing up nearly every morning for the last week. She came right between the morning coffee rush and the lunch sandwich rush. If he could spare a minute, heâd have a smoothie while she had coffee.
Sheâd hinted more than once about a third date. Heâd felt like an ass for not being able to answer her in the affirmative or even commit to a day of the week. More and more he started to appreciate how much work his parents had done. They may not have taken his suggestions, but he could come or go as he pleased. Their presence assured that he could go out at night, or weekends, or spend weeks abroad furthering his training in far-flung vineyards. He was wistful for what West Hollywood could have been and what Alsace and Burgundy had been. Dutifully, he took the next customer, handed over her cookies.
At ten forty-five precisely, he heard Sabrina dump her doggie poo bag in the outside garbage. In a few seconds, sheâd ask if she could wash her hands in the back. He pushed espresso beans into the grinder, then tamped them down in the portafilter. Hazelnut half and half was in the front of the fridge as she liked it better than milk or soy, almond, coconut, or all the other choices he needed to have on hand for his customers.
âMorning.â He nodded to her. Purposefully taciturn, he held in everything else. His feelings of joy and relief at her visit were best kept to himself. Until he could work out what he was going to do long term. Whether they could date or whether he had to devote himself to the business, which left no place for relationships or even going to the bathroom.
Predictably, she asked, âCan Iââ
âYou donât need to ask.â Henryâs tone was more brusque than he would have liked, but having her here and knowing he couldnât spend very much time with her was hard. âHazelnut latte?â he asked, this time more friendly.
She nodded, pulled off the hat her mom knit, smiled, and went through the back office door to the employees-only bathroom. After making sure Antonio could hold down the fort, he took Sabrinaâs coffee and one of the coconut cream smoothies that werenât selling out to the storeâs little porch.
Sabrina came out with the storeâs dog bowl and filled it for Spencer, who lapped greedily. The dog looked blissed out from the longer hikes sheâd been taking while training. She took a long sip, tipped her head up to catch a ray of sun that made its way through the slats of the porchâs pergola roof.
âYou make great coffee.â She put her cup down, then leaned her chin on her hand. The warmth radiating from her deep-brown eyes was more than what was coming from the sun. He wanted to melt into them, kiss her until they were unfocused with lust. Instead, he took a deep breath and tried to remember what sheâd said.
