The large cover over Big Red was just enough to keep out any running water from the pouring rain. “Listen,” said Sadie, “the rain has stopped! I need to go find Sherman and the momma duck!”

“Wait,” said Miss Sallie. “Smell the air!”

“SPAGHETTI,” they both said at once! And ran to Aunt Mimi’s back door. They both looked so dirty and wet that Aunt Mimi just had to let them in.

“Ok, but off with the shoes,” warned Aunt Mimi.

The sound of the chain saw, was all they could hear for the next three hours as Uncle Poppy cut log after log after log. And everyone else piled the logs neatly in the yard. Even Sherman carried the smaller sticks in his bill, while the momma duck and her babies all watched …..minus one. “Looks like we will make it to church in the morning,” said Uncle Poppy as he wiped wet saw dust from his face.

“And then we all must get ready for the Carnival which opens next Friday,” Aunt Mimi reminded them. “As for me, I have a lot of baking to do. Judging starts Wednesday and I want to win a few of those ribbons!”

Everybody laughed, because they all knew Aunt Mimi would win more than a few of those colorful ribbons! “Ok, let’s all see if my pie is suitable for the judges.”

Uncle Poppy said with a mouthful of pie, “Miss Sallie, you and Sadie are welcome to ride to church with us in the morning.”

“Oh, can we, Mother?” pleaded Sadie. “We’ll have to go a little earlier because me and Aunt Mimi has to have a few words with the Lord!”

Everybody laughed at Sadie’s words and Miss Sallie said, “You mean Aunt Mimi and I.”

“Oh, you too, Mother? Ok, let’s all go early!”

With that, another round of laughter, and now poor Sadie didn’t know what to think!
