Chapter Fifteen

“What do we do if it doesn’t blow over?”

Wren turned from the dishwasher, the last of the plates stacked in. Madison sat at the counter, hair loose around her shoulders in dark waves and face serious. Wren had assumed this conversation was done with; they’d talked about a whole host of other things since then and Madison had been a lot less bothered by all of this than she’d thought.

“What?”

“I subject hop a lot,” Madison said. “What do we do if all of these…girlfriend—” the word seemed hard for her to get out “—rumors don’t blow over?”

“We’ll make a statement, or do the tweet thing you mentioned. Or yell at some paparazzi.”

“Does that ever work?”

“Almost never.”

Madison’s fingers played at the stem of her wine glass. “What if that doesn’t work?”

Wren wanted to fix this. She hated that it was messing with someone else’s life. It was fine when it was her; she’d signed up for this. Madison hadn’t.

“Well, they can speculate all they want but it doesn’t really matter what they all say.”

“It kind of does for me—this is my life.”

Wren paused, because Wren’s life was all this. It was movies and TV and filming and gossip that she just ignored when she could. But Madison had a point: she had a whole life going on behind it all. “We’ll set it straight somehow.”

Madison nodded. “Okay.”

“Want another glass of wine?”

A shake of the head. “No, thank you. One is enough for me; I have to drive. You go ahead, though.”

Wren started to shove the cork back in the bottle. “I’m not much of a drinker. One was perfect. I’m already buzzed.”

“Do you really think one of the fans did it?” Madison asked quickly. “They seemed so excited to meet you.”

Wren shrugged. “I think it was one of them, judging by the angle. Sometimes people have issues understanding boundaries.”

“How can you be so understanding of such an invasion of your privacy? I feel like mine has been completely violated.”

Wren bit her lip. She leaned against the counter, elbows on the hard surface, and met Madison’s gaze. “I think I really am just used to it. It’s an unfortunate side effect of a job I adore. But if I were you, I’d feel exactly the same. I’m sorry,” she said earnestly.

Madison blinked, heavily. Her lips were stained a little from the wine and if Wren didn’t think it would be the most ridiculously inappropriate thing, she’d lean forward and capture those lips with her own.

Madison would probably slap her.

Best not to.

“It’s not your fault. I was all on board with messing with that asshole.” Madison pushed her empty glass away, pressing her palms to the counter and splaying her fingers. “The other Twitter stuff was a lot already, but I turned off notifications and could pretend it wasn’t there. This is an entirely different situation.”

She pulled her phone out and started reading. “‘Couple goals!’ And then there are about one million emojis. When did emojis get so popular?” Wren pressed her lips together and tried not to laugh.
