Chapter Fifteen
âWhat do we do if it doesnât blow over?â
Wren turned from the dishwasher, the last of the plates stacked in. Madison sat at the counter, hair loose around her shoulders in dark waves and face serious. Wren had assumed this conversation was done with; theyâd talked about a whole host of other things since then and Madison had been a lot less bothered by all of this than sheâd thought.
âWhat?â
âI subject hop a lot,â Madison said. âWhat do we do if all of theseâ¦girlfriendââ the word seemed hard for her to get out âârumors donât blow over?â
âWeâll make a statement, or do the tweet thing you mentioned. Or yell at some paparazzi.â
âDoes that ever work?â
âAlmost never.â
Madisonâs fingers played at the stem of her wine glass. âWhat if that doesnât work?â
Wren wanted to fix this. She hated that it was messing with someone elseâs life. It was fine when it was her; sheâd signed up for this. Madison hadnât.
âWell, they can speculate all they want but it doesnât really matter what they all say.â
âIt kind of does for meâthis is my life.â
Wren paused, because Wrenâs life was all this. It was movies and TV and filming and gossip that she just ignored when she could. But Madison had a point: she had a whole life going on behind it all. âWeâll set it straight somehow.â
Madison nodded. âOkay.â
âWant another glass of wine?â
A shake of the head. âNo, thank you. One is enough for me; I have to drive. You go ahead, though.â
Wren started to shove the cork back in the bottle. âIâm not much of a drinker. One was perfect. Iâm already buzzed.â
âDo you really think one of the fans did it?â Madison asked quickly. âThey seemed so excited to meet you.â
Wren shrugged. âI think it was one of them, judging by the angle. Sometimes people have issues understanding boundaries.â
âHow can you be so understanding of such an invasion of your privacy? I feel like mine has been completely violated.â
Wren bit her lip. She leaned against the counter, elbows on the hard surface, and met Madisonâs gaze. âI think I really am just used to it. Itâs an unfortunate side effect of a job I adore. But if I were you, Iâd feel exactly the same. Iâm sorry,â she said earnestly.
Madison blinked, heavily. Her lips were stained a little from the wine and if Wren didnât think it would be the most ridiculously inappropriate thing, sheâd lean forward and capture those lips with her own.
Madison would probably slap her.
Best not to.
âItâs not your fault. I was all on board with messing with that asshole.â Madison pushed her empty glass away, pressing her palms to the counter and splaying her fingers. âThe other Twitter stuff was a lot already, but I turned off notifications and could pretend it wasnât there. This is an entirely different situation.â
She pulled her phone out and started reading. ââCouple goals!â And then there are about one million emojis. When did emojis get so popular?â Wren pressed her lips together and tried not to laugh.
