Eve stood quite motionless. There was not a sound to be heard, except the muffled noise from the traffic outside. All around her was complete stillness.

Yet in the bedroom close by Alexei Constantin was waiting for her to go to him and have sex with him.

Sex on terms that were, for him, perfectly normal…perfectly acceptable.

Perfectly familiar.

An image resolved in her brain. Alexei Constantin walking out of the nightclub in the Côte d’Azur with a prostitute on his arm, taking her back to his room to pay for sex with her.

Words formed in her mind, falling like stones. This time the payment would not be cash, but the title deeds to Beaumont.

What did you expect? Moonlight and stars, romance and sweet nothings?

The mockery slayed her. Ground into dust even the memory of those few wonderful moments. The bliss she had felt just now, as he had kissed her, had brought that memory searingly to life again. A memory she’d nailed down so tight it had had no room to breathe, no room to exist.

But it had got free.

Dismay hollowed out inside her.

It was me—I let it out. She had let him see, in her face, her eyes, what he could do to her, how her stupid, treacherous, betraying body reacted to him.

Dismay flooded her, along with guilt and self-accusation. Oh, God, she’d opened herself up for this! She’d signalled to him and he had homed straight in on it!

And now he wanted to collect. Collect on the terms he was accustomed to offering to those women he used for sex.

The nausea went through her again. And another wave of disbelief.

She shut her eyes, trying to shut out what was happening to her. But it wasn’t any good. She was here, in a private suite, and Alexei Constantin had just informed her, coolly and indifferently, that he expected sex with her if she wanted him to agree to sell her back Beaumont.

Beaumont. The reason she was here. The only reason. To get Beaumont back.

And she would get Beaumont back.

She must get Beaumont back, whatever it cost her.

In her eyes was a bleakness she would have given anything not to have there.

This is what he’s like. You knew it—you knew it the moment Pierre told you that woman was a prostitute!

Yes, she had known it—but up until this moment she had never understood, never felt, just how hideous that truth about Alexei Constantin was to her.

You wanted him to be someone different.

But he wasn’t. He was what she had known him to be since her illusions about him had been ripped away. And the pain cut through her like a knife through living flesh.

No! It doesn’t matter! It didn’t matter then, and it doesn’t matter now. All that matters now is what are you going to do?

The bleakness in her eyes leached into her face.

She had to get Beaumont back for her mother—for all who depended on it.

That was all there was to it. No other option. No other choice.

I have to do this.
