Chapter 10

"Ms. Harmer?" Ray's eyes scanned her face. She knew he was taking in every nuance of her reaction. "What do you think of that theory?"

"I think," she said, "that the possibility should have occurred to me earlier. Mostly because it's the only theory I've heard so far that might explain my son's current state of mind." She swivelled to face Tommy, unable to keep accusation from coloring her tone. "I suppose you've been incubating this idea all along?"

He shook his head. "I told you I thought the reasons he gave us for moving out were bogus, but I didn't really put his leaving together with this string of incidents until now. And remember, it's just a theory. It may be way off base."

"Well, having investigated a number of other angles, this one sounds pretty damned promising." Ray held up her shopping list with her hand-drawn facsimile of the swooping signature. "Can I keep this?"

"Of course."

"Anything else you can think of that I should know?"

She shook her head.

"Then I'd best get these photos taken care of so I can go home to my wife."

"Your family, you mean," Tommy said. "That gorgeous daughter of yours can't be much more than a year, year and a half."

"We're temporarily childless tonight." He started gathering up the photos and sliding them carefully back into the envelope. "Much as I love the little sprogg, I'm happy to say Aunt Suz and Uncle Quigg have her tonight."

He flashed that sexy grin, and Paige felt a stab of envy, sharp and unexpected. That was all she'd wanted from life, once upon a time. Children and a good man who'd come home to her at night with a look in his eye that said he was glad to be there.

"Your anniversary, and here we are, keeping you." Paige jumped up. Tommy came to his feet beside her, plucking his cane from where he'd hooked it on the edge of the desk.

They said their goodbyes, and Ray headed one way with the envelope of evidence, while she and Tommy headed the other. This time, however, the corridors were not as quiet as they'd been on their arrival.

Three times, they had to stop to talk to people Tommy knew — two patrolmen and a staff sergeant. To Paige's dismay, the greetings seemed overly hearty, and everyone had something they had to rush off to. The patrolmen, especially, couldn't get away fast enough.

Tommy was tight lipped by the time they reached the parking lot.

"Want me to drive?" she offered.

"Why? You think that business back there upset me?" His smile was grim. "I told you, I'm well aware of the psychology in operation here. It's not personal."

"Maybe they just need some time to get used to the idea of...."

"What they need to do is bury me, as deep as they can. The only choice I have in this is where I'm gonna let myself be buried. Frankly, I prefer to it be out here, not in there." He indicated the station they'd just left with a jerk of his head.
