Chapter Ten

Hakon

After catching the scent of their brother and following the sound of snowmobiles, Hakon and Rone circled the abandoned church in their wolf forms. Though Hakon wasn’t as good of a tracker as Luc, he had known to come to this forest with the massive thermal pond, the steam rising up from the water a sharp contrast to the snow that blanketed every branch in the surrounding dense forest. He didn’t know how he’d known to come here. Call it instinct. Call it luck. Either way, all that mattered was that they rescued their mate and brother.

The evening sun had already made its quick descent across the horizon, but with his wolf-touched eyes, Hakon easily adjusted to the darkness and could see his breath fogging the frigid air.

He heard voices coming from inside the church and recognized the word ‘volk’ which was Russian for wolf. He searched for any signs of Amara, panic pumping ore through his veins when he couldn’t scent her.

They have Drasko, Rone’s voice echoed in his mind.

He looked over at his wolf brother, his ears flattening against his skull. I know.

Rone let out a keening whimper. Why don’t I smell Amara?

Hakon swallowed as he turned his attention toward the shadows moving behind the church’s stained windows. She’s not here. He tried not to think about what that meant. His mate had to be alive. He wouldn’t accept any other possibility.

Rone’s whimper was a blade slicing through his heart. Could she be dead?

We can’t think on that right now, Rone. We have to free Drasko. He’ll tell us where Amara is hiding. She couldn’t be dead.

Rone’s whimper intensified. Why would they have him and not her?

Enough! He snarled at his brother. We have to come up with a plan.

I’m going to rip out their throats. Rone kicked the snow beneath his paw like a bull preparing to charge. That’s my plan.

Rone, you’re not thinking clearly, Hakon snapped. If they can disable a protector, they can disable you.

She’s dead, Hakon. Rone’s panic radiated off him in strong pulses. They killed her. She had no way to defend herself because she can’t shift.

Hakon growled a warning. Drasko wouldn’t let that happen.

Rone’s golden eyes narrowed. Drasko is their prisoner!

Luc and the other trackers might have her. Hakon did his best to sound convincing, though he wasn’t sure if he needed to convince Rone or himself.

Then how did they let the Russians take Drasko?

He had a point, but Hakon still refused to acknowledge it. She couldn’t be dead. He wouldn’t allow it, and if the Ancients tried to take her from them, he’d march into Valhol and take her back. Finally, he expelled a breath of air, his shoulders slumping. I don’t know.

They killed her! They killed our mate! Rone threw back his head and let out a mournful howl.

Rone, calm down, Hakon snapped, but it was too late. The shadows behind the windows scurried about and their voices rose to a feverish pitch. He swore. Now they know we’re here!

I don’t care.
