Kevin lay there listening to Tamiâs soft breathing as she slept soundly. Now that he had her safe, he could replay the events from the time he stepped into her tiny bathroom to now. He cursed himself for not noticing something wasnât right as soon as they entered her apartment. His hunger and need for her had superseded his engrained instincts. Something heâd have to keep an eye on. Her ability to find trouble wherever she went would mean heâd have to stay on his toes. A minor sacrifice to keep such an amazing woman in his life.
Heâd never seen anything like this before. Even though they werenât sure what kind of blood it was yet, the violence it took to gather that much made his own run cold. And for what? What purpose did anyone have to do this to her? Briggs had to be severely unstable and that scared the hell out of him. How many bodies would they find over the course of the next few months?
Sheâd be no match against a crazed lunatic with murder on his mind. The idea of her being in that apartment alone until they caught him made his gut twist. The man obviously had no problem breaking in. He could do it again.
Then those nasty fucking what ifs started popping into his mind. What if sheâd been there when he broke in? What if the bastard showed up just before he arrived to pick her up? The thought of walking in and finding Tami beaten, bloody and possibly dead set his nerves on fire. Heâd never get over it. Ever. It would be yet another time he wasnât there for the woman he loved when she needed him the most.
Silently he cursed for doing this to himself. It hadnât happened. They were together and she was safe. End of story. He would see to it she stayed that way and the safest place for her would be here in his home. Was it too soon? Would it work? He had no doubts. Would she?
Kevin tried to rub the tension out from behind his eyes. Too fast. He didnât want to scare her away. Heâd let her rebuild her security and go from there. Steps, it all needed to be taken in steps.
Yet another worrisome question popped into his mind. All her windows and even her back door had tape on them, an alert showing if someone had broken in. Why? Certainly something heâd have to ask about. Part of his ego took a hit over this. If she had fears, why hadnât she come to him with them?
Kevin frowned in the darkness. Heâd make a point of showing her she could depend on him for more than a good fuck. Being in his life meant more, much more. Starting first thing tomorrow, he would strive to be the man she needed. Settling in, Kevin closed his eyes and hoped the nightmares stayed away.
