Lyssa could see why Ric had insisted it was important to spend a night on the island. Not that sheâd needed convincing. A late-evening stroll around the piazzetta, which was enclosed by a baroque church and several cafés, was simply magical without all the daytrippers milling about.
And the terrace near the bell tower provided a stunning view of the lights of the Bay of Naples. It was a pity they were only staying for one night. She could get used to this.
They ate at a pretty terraced restaurant where Lyssa tried the islandâs own speciality, insalata capreseâtomato slices interleaved with buffalo-milk mozzarella and sprigs of fresh basil, drizzled with local olive oil and lemon, and sprinkled with black pepper. She loved the creamy texture of the cheese and followed the salad with black pastaâhomemade pasta cooked in squid inkâa dish sheâd heard of but never had the nerve to try. But she was in the mood for new experiences. This one was better than sheâd expected.
As usual, conversation flowed. In a rare break, Lyssa allowed herself to think about Steve, or, rather, about the meals theyâd shared. It had never been like this with him.
Now that she thought about it, they hadnât talked much at all. The exchange of essential information couldnât really be called conversation.
Why had she never realised that when she was with him?
Because she hadnât had anything better to compare it with, had she?
In all the time sheâd known him, sheâd never experienced her stomach fluttering at the sound of his voice or flipping at the sudden appearance of his smile. Sheâd never felt a sense of loss when he was out of her sight, or a ripple of excitement when he returned.
Now she knew what it was like to experience all these things and she was a little ashamed of herself. That she, a strong, independent woman, should have settled for so long for a relationship that was less than she deserved.
Because she deserved someone who enjoyed talking with her. Someone who teased and joked, but who always made it clear he valued her opinion.
Someone like Ric.
He certainly wasnât the man sheâd thought when she first met him. He didnât fit the mould sheâd tried to squeeze him into. He wasnât the arrogant, self-obsessed playboy sheâd assumed, even though he had that lifestyle.
But she couldnât have Ric. She was only in Italy for another week. She could enjoy his company while she had it, then she had to walk away as if sheâd never met him.
