Lyssa could see why Ric had insisted it was important to spend a night on the island. Not that she’d needed convincing. A late-evening stroll around the piazzetta, which was enclosed by a baroque church and several cafés, was simply magical without all the daytrippers milling about.

And the terrace near the bell tower provided a stunning view of the lights of the Bay of Naples. It was a pity they were only staying for one night. She could get used to this.

They ate at a pretty terraced restaurant where Lyssa tried the island’s own speciality, insalata caprese—tomato slices interleaved with buffalo-milk mozzarella and sprigs of fresh basil, drizzled with local olive oil and lemon, and sprinkled with black pepper. She loved the creamy texture of the cheese and followed the salad with black pasta—homemade pasta cooked in squid ink—a dish she’d heard of but never had the nerve to try. But she was in the mood for new experiences. This one was better than she’d expected.

As usual, conversation flowed. In a rare break, Lyssa allowed herself to think about Steve, or, rather, about the meals they’d shared. It had never been like this with him.

Now that she thought about it, they hadn’t talked much at all. The exchange of essential information couldn’t really be called conversation.

Why had she never realised that when she was with him?

Because she hadn’t had anything better to compare it with, had she?

In all the time she’d known him, she’d never experienced her stomach fluttering at the sound of his voice or flipping at the sudden appearance of his smile. She’d never felt a sense of loss when he was out of her sight, or a ripple of excitement when he returned.

Now she knew what it was like to experience all these things and she was a little ashamed of herself. That she, a strong, independent woman, should have settled for so long for a relationship that was less than she deserved.

Because she deserved someone who enjoyed talking with her. Someone who teased and joked, but who always made it clear he valued her opinion.

Someone like Ric.

He certainly wasn’t the man she’d thought when she first met him. He didn’t fit the mould she’d tried to squeeze him into. He wasn’t the arrogant, self-obsessed playboy she’d assumed, even though he had that lifestyle.

But she couldn’t have Ric. She was only in Italy for another week. She could enjoy his company while she had it, then she had to walk away as if she’d never met him.
