Chapter Nine
“Wait, you what?” Liv looked wide-eyed at the woman who sat across from her.
“You heard her, Precious,” Kevin said through his laughter.
“Trust me, it warrants repeating.” Liv turned back to her friend. “Spill.”
“It’s not a big deal,” Sierra hedged.
“If it isn’t a big deal, then why are you blushing?” Colt’s teasing manner had Sierra rolling her eyes.
“Fine. I may have mooned my high school math teacher. He was mean and gross with all the girls.”
“So, showing him your ass was totally going to teach him.” Kevin dodged the roll that flew at his head.
“No, throwing food, little girl,” Colt scolded.
“I never said it was a good idea or well thought out, but at that moment, it was exactly what I needed,” Sierra justified her actions. “You guys can’t tell me you’ve never done anything like that.” She looked between the men expectantly.
“I put a cow in my high school, on the third floor.” When Kevin didn’t get a reaction, he rolled his eyes. “It is a little-known fact that cows can go up steps but not down them. Our school had no elevator.”
Laughter sounded around the table, Liv’s much quieter than the rest.
“I streaked across the football field during the state championship.”
“That was you?” Sierra gaped at her friend, a mixture of shock and admiration in her eyes.
“Yep. Thank God, cell phones weren’t as big a thing back then.” Liv snorted. “Or equipped with shitty cameras.”
“What about you?” Sierra turned to Colt. “What was the dumbest thing you ever did in high school?”
“Well.” Quirking his brow, Colt spoke through the shit-eating smile on his face. “I waited until I was eighteen to show off my hacking skills and ended up in prison.”
“That takes all the fun out of the game,” Kevin mumbled as he pushed his clean plate away.
The laughter was once again dying down when the waitress reappeared.
“Can I interest you guys in dessert?”
“Sierra, do you want some cheesecake? Or I hear their red bottom cupcake is really good.” Kevin’s face was clear of any emotion.
“No, thank you.” A blush rose from Sierra’s neck.
Colt looked at the other three people at the table. “I’m missing something, aren’t I?”
“You are, which means, now I get to tell you.” Kevin broke eye contact with the squirming woman across from him to turn to her Daddy, waiting for the waitress to leave before he spoke again. “The real reason she cut her hours at work is she hates it and wants to change careers.”
“Oh, I know.” Colt’s hand disappeared under the table, sending Sierra jumping a few seconds later.
Shock registered on Sierra’s face. “But I didn’t tell you.”
“Starlight, it’s obvious every time you get ready for work.” Colt pulled her into his arms as soon as the tears started to fill her eyes. “Baby, what’s wrong?”
“You knew and didn’t tell me.” Sierra curled into him.
“I was waiting for you to be honest with me. Tell me how you felt. Tell me you lied to me.” Colt’s face went stone hard with the last statement.
