“What did the captain want?” Todd said, barely looking up from his laptop. Lita sat in the corner of their room cleaning a handgun and seemed focused on her task.

Pete handed Todd a small stack of rolled maps. “He handed these to me at the end.” Todd looked up and squinted at Pete. He held Pete’s gaze, but after a full minute, Pete sighed.

“I wasn’t really able to get a straight answer from him. I think he wanted to size me up. He was talking about hidden thorns and something about The Faceless, but he wouldn’t explain what he meant.” Todd raised an eyebrow, and Lita scoffed.

“Everyone’s curious about the golden boy.”

Pete opened his mouth and then forced it shut and nodded. “Yeah.” He pulled out his own pack and started unpacking it. “That’s me.” He turned to Todd, his eyes flicking to Lita for a moment.

“Who are The Faceless?”

“You don’t know?” Todd said, genuinely shocked. “Seriously?”

Pete blushed and shrugged. “You keep forgetting. I just died like a year and a half ago. There’s a lot I don’t know yet.”

“Yeah, yeah, I keep forgetting. I guess that makes sense…” Todd thought about it. “Outside of The Community and a few other small circles, I guess they are not that well known. They are so famous inside the circles that I guess I just forgot some people have never heard of them.”

“Them?”

Todd cleared his throat. “Well, The Faceless are a group. To be one of The Faceless—that’s a capital ‘The’, by the way. They care about that distinction.”

“Rambling,” Lita grumbled.

“Right, well, it’s a title. They are the best of the best. They are the top guys. The Community is a…well, it’s a community, yes, but it’s more of a job board. You post your services, for lack of a better term, and people hire you. To be one of the Faceless is a title. It labels you as someone who has learned a set of skills that is so rare and so deadly that only a few people survive getting this title.”

“What are their skills?”

“Killing,” Todd said, simply. “They are assassins and the best of the best at what they do.”

“Why do they call themselves Faceless?”

“Well, supposedly, they can erase their face.” Pete stared at Todd and he shrugged. “There are enough rumors that I suspect there is something to it.”

“So, if I see a guy walking around without a face, I know I shouldn’t mess with him?” Pete chuckled.

“Yes,” Todd said, also chuckling. “But they supposedly only show that face to people they are about to poltergeist. It’s like their calling card.”

“Their Black Spot?” Pete asked. Todd paused what he was doing and looked at Pete blankly.

“I thought that was a pirate thing,” Pete said, unsure. “You know. The pirates give a paper with a black spot to someone they are about to kill.”

“Huh. Then sure, yeah, l guess that’s close enough.”

Pete thought about that for a moment. “I still don’t get what the captain meant by what he said. Something about seeing The Faceless and thorns.
