Chapter 9
Penny Sue put on her new silk party dress. The form-fitting design and the coral-red color did wonders for her. It not only made her auburn hair appear darker, but it made her brown eyes look black and her pale-olive complexion shimmer. Every hourglass-shaped woman should own at least one décolleté dress that exposed some cleavage and hugged her waist and hips. After sitting on the bed to slip into her coral high-heeled sandals, she reached over and picked up the gold pendant necklace that had been an eighteenth birthday present from her aunts. The delicate oval pendant had belonged to her Grandmother Paine. She wore it only on special occasions. And she knew, with absolute certainty, that tonight was going to be special.
Thinking about Vic, she sighed. If she had ever seen a man in desperate need of love and affection, it was Vic. He tried to act as if he was immune to the basic human needs, that he felt nothing romantic for her. But she knew better. Oh, he might be telling himself that he was simply sexually attracted to her, but eventually, he would realize that sex wasn’t all he wanted from her. He said he didn’t believe in love at first sight, that he didn’t even believe in love.
Penny Sue laughed. Had it been only a few days ago that she’d felt the same way, that she had believed there would never be true love and exhilarating passion for her?
She had never dreamed she could fall head over heels for someone she barely knew, a man who hadn’t been a part of her life until three days ago. Now, she knew better. She was in love with Vic. No doubt about it. She could deny it all she wanted—and she had—but it didn’t change the fact that she was in love. It was one of those crazy, irrational things that didn’t make any sense whatsoever. But there it was—true love. And a love stronger and more powerful than anything she could have imagined. Having been in love only once before in her entire life—with Dylan Redley—she knew all the signs. Butterflies in the tummy. Thinking of the other person all the time. Longing to be with him. Filled with happiness the moment he walked into a room. Wanting his kisses, his touches. But with Vic, there was more. A passion afire deep inside her, a longing that urged her to take action.
She rose from the bed, picked up her beige shawl and beige purse and walked across the room. After knocking on the closed door to Vic’s room, she waited for a response.
“Be there in a sec,” he said.
“Ruby has Lucky downstairs. She’s fed him his supper and put on his new blue collar that matches his new leash. So, we’re ready whenever you are.”
Penny Sue knew that Vic didn’t want to attend this party at Doc Stone’s in his honor. He seemed reluctant to accept his hero status. Why was that? she wondered. It was apparent that he wasn’t a people person and in that respect they were exact opposites.
