CHAPTER SEVENTEEN
AS THEY WALKED UP the path, Nancy asked Tim, âWhat did you want to talk to me about?â
âHave you had a chance to find a stable where Angie can take some beginner lessons?â
She stopped. âIâm so sorry, Tim. Iâve just been swamped at the clinic. I havenât had a chance.â
He ducked his head. âNo, Iâm sorry. That was stupid. I know youâre doing double-duty. But if you can give me some ideas, I can make the calls myself. I looked in the telephone book, but I have no way of knowing which stables would be better or even where theyâre located.â
She sighed. âAnd I did promise. Okay. Iâll make you a list tonight and leave it inside your storm door tomorrow morning. Iâll ask Mac to talk to his daughter, Emma, to see if she has any ideas.â
âThanks.â
Jason loped ahead. He kept a wary eye on his feet in case the snake should be waiting for him.
âNow, whatâs Jasonâs problem?â
âHeâs agreed to play defense with the Maybree lacrosse team. They start practice three afternoons a week starting next week. Jason wonât be able to work more than two days week, and only from three to five, if you think itâs worth having him.â
âI do if he does. Iâll tell Rick. Actually, after the fuss he made about scrubbing cages, Iâm surprised heâs not quitting entirely.â
âFuss?â He stopped and took her arm. âHe behaved badly?â
She disengaged her arm gently. âJust teenage bitching.â She walked on. âBig straightened him out. Says heâs fine with the animals. Just a little lazy.â
âBitchy and lazy. The perfect employee.â Tim sounded disgusted.
âHey, lighten up. He is coming back tomorrow afternoon, isnât he?â
âIâll swing by here, pick him up and drop him off at the clinic after my morning meeting.â
âUnless I run into an emergency, he can ride home with me at five.â
âI donât like to impose.â
âPuh-leeze. I live across the street.â
âWait.â Theyâd reached the line of old oak trees that surrounded Timâs backyard. The westering sun left the yard in deep shadow, and under the trees it was twilight. âI enjoyed last night.â He grinned. âI really enjoyed this afternoon.â
She could feel the blush suffuse her entire body. Even in the shadows sheâd be willing to bet Tim could see her change color. He could certainly see her nipples under her wet T-shirt. âMe, too.â
âThen why run away?â
âI didnât. I was tired.â
âBull. You ran. Youâre running now.â
âIâm standing in one place.â
âYour body is in one place, but inside youâre halfway to your front porch.â
âHow do you know?â He was starting to annoy her.
He took her face between his palms and kissed her gently.
Whoo, boy.
A moment later he dropped his hands to her waist and pulled her close. His hands slid down to cup her near his hips.
Without conscious thought she moved against him, pressing her hips to his erection. She slid her arms beneath his and around his waist to hold him tight.
All the while they kissed. Tongue answered tongue.
She wanted to open to him right there against an oak tree with one leg locked around his waist to hold him inside.
