CHAPTER NINETEEN
hayden
âTristan?â The door is slightly ajar. This is the time we agreed on, so I go ahead and push the door open all the way and walk inside. Iâm not greeted by Roxy, which is weird, but then I see Tristan stepping out from the hallway.
âHey.â God, he looks good. Admittedly, I give him shit about his wardrobe, but no one wears basic black like he does. Tonight, heâs wearing a simple black button-down, rolled up to the elbow, with a pair of jeans that cling to his muscular thighs and make me whimper with want.
This canât be real.
His smile tells me it is, though, as he walks to me, both of us uncertain about how to greet each other as we awkwardly stand there. âThank you for coming.â
âI mean, this is where I would normally be anyway.â I look around. âExcept Iâm usually greeted by a furball.â
He grins and then gestures to the backyard. âRoxy is out in her new fenced-in yard. Donât worry, I made sure she has her favorite toys, food, and plenty of water. But I thought for our first date, maybe it should just be us.â
âThis is really happening then?â I say it like a question and immediately feel stupid for allowing myself to voice my thoughts out loud.
His slow grin and patient look is enough to melt my nerves away. âYes. First date. The first of many, and hopefully someday, we can leave my place.â He motions to the kitchen table I now see has two plates and takeout containers. âBut for now, I think this could work.â
My nose leads me to the table, and my stomach growls when I realize itâs tacos Iâm smelling. âTacos?â
He nods and pulls the chair out for me to take a seat. I decide to not be difficult for once and do just that. He moves over to the kitchen counter, grabbing something before dropping a bag in front of me. âAnd gummy worms, of course.â
âTacos and gummy worms.â My head swivels toward the living room. âAnd a horror movie?â
He grins, placing tacos on our plates. âOf course. Although . . .â
âNo clowns,â I say with a devilish smirk, nearly laughing at the thought of my big bad cop being terrified of clowns.
He pretends to shudder as he takes a seat across the table. âYeah. I thought maybe the newer Amityville Horror. I havenât seen that one yet.â
âRyan Reynolds, shirtless. Sign me up.â I take a bite of taco, a happy moan falling from my lips as an angry growl escapes from Tristan. I laugh, but I also canât believe heâs jealous. âEasy, boy. Iâll take you shirtless any day.â
âDamn straight.â He takes a bite, and my nerves kick back up.
âThis is like every night with us, you know?â
He chews and swallows before taking a drink of water and placing his glass back on the table to give me his full attention. âBut now, we know itâs an actual date though.â
âWhy though?â
He cocks his head to the side, clearly confused by my question.
