Terry hated arriving late. Hated it with a passion. But he had to admit, this morning it had its advantages. For one thing, there was the reason why they were late. He could still recall the warmth of Nickâs bed, the time spent holding each other, kissing andâ¦
Uh-uh. Not now. Time enough for that later. He could replay it all when practice was over, when he had time to sit and reflect that it really had happened. Because it still felt like a dream.
He and Nick had barely made it onto the college playing field before the coach blew his whistle to get the teamâs attention. Having a Saturday morning practice was unusual, but it was their bye week, they had a big game coming up, and their performance in the previous game had left a lot to be desired. So it wasnât surprising that the coach had turned up with a schedule.
Terry didnât mind that. The college was in the running to win the championship, and only a few crucial games remained. Everyone had to give their best if they were going to do this. The coach had worked out several plays, and it was obvious they werenât going to be out of there until he was happy with them. He ran them ragged, and it wasnât long before the whining started.
âSuck it up, boys,â Coach bellowed as they dropped onto the grass for a break. âDonât blame me if youâre playing with a sore head and a suede tongue. Thatâs what you get for partying the night before a practice. And donât even think about complaining, because you were the ones who wanted this practice in the first place.â
âCoach, howâd you know about the party?â Ty Wheeler asked, before someone jabbed their elbow into his ribs.
Coach let out a raucous laugh. âSeriously? You oughta know by now, Wheeler, I see everything. Including those who almost didnât make it on time. Yeah, Prentiss, Byers, Iâm talking to you.â
Nick caught Terryâs gaze and smirked.
âThey got an excuse,â Jake said with a grin. âHavenât you, boys?â
Terry didnât give Jake the satisfaction of even registering the remark.
âAnd when you dainty prima donnas are ready, we still have half an hour to go.â Loud groans greeted his words, and he cackled. âYou wanna win, right? So get your asses into gear, and show me what youâve got.â Coach gave them an evil grin. âJust imagine all the alcohol pouring out of you in your sweat. Think of it as a detox.â He gave his whistle a savage blow. âMove it, boys.â
âYeah, that includes you ladies too,â Jake added, smirking at Terry and Nick.
Coach stilled, his gaze narrowed. âYou got something to say, Kowalski?â
âNot me, Coach.â Jake looked him in the eye.
âGlad to hear it. Now quit running your mouth off and show me why I need to keep you on this team.â
That was enough to shut Jake up.
For the next thirty minutes, Terry forgot about everything but the practice. He sloughed off his fears and doubts, and concentrated on following the coachâs instructions.
