The museum wants me to do two more buildings for them.

So amazing!

We’re talking specifics now.

Running a little bit late.

Not too much longer… I hope.

Fuck, baby. They’re still here. I feel horrible. And my phone’s about to die.

A few things to finish up.

So sorry.

Wes touched her shoulder and she jumped, spilling some of water from the glass she still held.

Closer to tears than she’d been with anyone other than Michael, she shooed Wes out of the room. “It’s fine. He’ll be here in a minute or two, I’m sure.” Faking it wasn’t going to last much longer. The shakes set in and she didn’t want him to touch her again or he’d know something was wrong.

Really wrong.

“Are you sure you’re okay? The last thing I want to do is bail if you still need me here.”

“I’m fine.” Totally not fine. And it wasn’t that she didn’t need someone. She just didn’t need him.

“If you’re sure, then I’ll go. I’ll call you tomorrow to check on you. Okay?” He added the last word a few seconds later when she didn’t respond.

“Mm-hmm. Tomorrow.”

His eyebrows turned low into a vee, but he shouldered his bag and walked around to her side of the mattress. He kissed her head and she had to hold her breath to lock her muscles up tight and keep the tears in place.

“Bye, Tabby Cat.”

She attempted a smile and added a bit of a wave.

He paused at the door for a second then he was gone.

Silence set off her panic.

Alone.

She was completely alone.

A submissive without her Dom.

A wife without her husband.

A friend without her other half.

What a terrifyingly empty place.

A dark place where fear and hurt and hopelessness snuck in to yank her down and drown her.

She hadn’t heard the texts because she must have turned off the volume when she’d almost dropped it when Wes got there.

How do I answer him?

What do I say?

Before she lost her nerve, she called his cell. Straight to voicemail. More than likely dead with no charger at work. Pushing the end call button, she cut off his voice in the middle of a sentence.

That was how she felt.

Cut off in the middle of something amazing because he wasn’t there.

She needed him and her protector wasn’t there.

Tabitha sat there under the covers, leaning against the headboard, trying to figure out what to text. Nothing. She had nothing.

She had no clue how long she sat there staring at the screen. Long enough for it to go black.

She set her phone down and reached for her water.

Work. She could call him at work. But what would she say?

A knock on the hotel room door startled her.

Joy lifted her spirits and she bolted to the door. Then she had a moment of self-preservation and grabbed a blanket off the bed to wrap around herself.

Excitement raced through her.

Michael made it!

The ping-pong of emotions made her a bit nauseous but it didn’t matter. Nothing mattered but getting to the man she’d given herself to years ago. Nothing mattered but him.
