When I knocked on the door of Ma’s cabin, it was opened by a stranger. The woman inside told me my mother had moved house. She gave me directions to the new place. And when I got there I found out that my mother had married a man by the name of Mr Jeremiah Crawley.

Ma didn’t seem to have much luck when it came to picking husbands. Mr Crawley had borrowed money from the bank and bought a small farm on the edge of the woods. He and Ma had settled down to raising children of their own. But he’d gotten sick not long after their wedding, so instead of being a blessing he became a burden. He couldn’t save Ma from poverty or support the family. Instead, she just had one more mouth to feed, one more body to care for, one more baby on the way.

She was struggling to hold things together. Alexander was bigger and stronger than he’d been the last time I’d seen him, but he just didn’t have Pa’s skills or sense. He still couldn’t shoot straight or plough a clean furrow. Katherine was doing the best she could to help Ma, but they were all stick‑thin and miserable and I was the very last thing any of them wanted to see. I hadn’t been home five minutes before I realised the only place I’d be welcome was the County Infirmary.
