Chapter 6
Jaxon led Kassidy through the maze of vehicles parked at the NC State Fairgrounds. He’d talked her into ditching the remainder of her workday and going on an impromptu first date. Judging by the way her eyes danced when he finally revealed their destination, the festival had been a great idea.
“I have a confession,” Jaxon said.
Kassidy glanced at him. “Confession? Uh-oh.”
“Nothing like that. I thought reconnecting with you would be awkward.”
“Awkward? Why?”
“We didn’t exactly do things in the right order. Sex, then a first date.”
“Yeah, I guess we didn’t. Is it? Awkward, I mean?”
“No,” he said. “Actually, it feels like I’ve known you for forever. Crazy, huh?”
Flashing a smile, she said, “No. Not crazy at all.”
Did that mean she felt the same way? “What about you? Do you have any qualms?”
Kassidy smiled and bit at the corner of her lip. The sexy move made him want to kiss her right then, but he didn’t want to appear too greedy.
“Out with it,” he said.
“I’m just really hoping you don’t turn out to be an asshole.”
Jaxon barked a laugh. “I’m not an asshole. Tenacious, impatient at times, demanding at others, but never an asshole.”
Kassidy stopped abruptly. “Demanding? Is that another way of saying you’re a control freak?”
Testing the boundaries, he said, “What if I said yes?”
“Then I would say this is probably our first and last date.”
Jaxon raised a brow. “Wow. You don’t sugar coat, do you?”
“Only my confections.” She bumped him playfully. “You didn’t answer my question. Are you a control freak?”
“Only in the bedroom.”
Her gaze slid past him. Was a memory of their night together playing in her head? The crooked smile that spread across her face would suggest so. Maybe she was considering his claim. Had his words hit her with a shock of awareness? In his suite, she hadn’t seemed to mind his take-charge approach.
They started to move again. “What are you thinking about? You have this silly grin on your face,” he said.
“I’m thinking about how fun this is going to be.”
That smirk she flashed told him her response was anything but the truth. However, he didn’t call her out.
As they leisurely strolled, he couldn’t take his eyes off of her. Her breasts strained against the v-neck tee she wore, and he wanted to suckle them through the yellow fabric. Would she be opposed to them dashing behind a building to making love? The vision of taking her against a wall played in his head. The tightening in his jeans snatched him back to reality.
“So, do I get brownie points for bringing you here?”
“Yes. I love festivals.”
“Yes. One point for the home team.” Jaxon threaded his fingers through hers. “I should probably hold your hand.” He shrugged. “I mean, we are practically boyfriend and girlfriend.”
“Boyfriend and girlfriend, huh? What makes you so sure?”
He searched their surroundings. “If I walked over to that woman right there,” he pointed to a shapely brunette, “and gave her my number, would you be upset?”
Kassidy snatched her hand away. “Ah, yeah.”
“Just like I thought.
