The Love Boat

Looking back, I know that there were times when my expectations of finding what I was searching for in life were not met.

The trip to St John’s Island was one of many examples of this. I had been so looking forward to the past-life regression retreat with Brian Weiss. I had read his books and was longing to meet him. But in the end, although the workshops were interesting, I doubted some of the stories and it didn’t quite work out the way I’d hoped.

There were some positives, however. The island was as beautiful as I had remembered when my best friend from the gym and I had visited previously, and I was so grateful to be back. I’d always known I would return here one day. I stayed in one of the permanent tents overlooking the bay. The view was breathtaking. Standing in the sea at night was also spectacular. There was marine phosphorescence everywhere. It was like having the universe around your legs.

And then there was the vision.

It happened during one of the guided meditations into past lives. As we were asked to close our eyes, we were told to see if we had known anyone else in the room from a past life. I saw a man who wasn’t physically in the room. He had dark, shoulder-length wavy hair and a long white robe. He also had arresting blue eyes that looked right into me, as if they could burn a hole in my soul.

When I opened my eyes again, he had gone.

But I knew who he was.

I had seen him before, sitting at a well.

It was Jesus.

Returning to Westport I found that my friend’s marriage had now broken down and she had moved her stuff – and mine – to a new place where she let me stay too. I was so grateful to her for helping me like this, especially at such a difficult time. But I knew I couldn’t stay long. I wanted to travel and I had a special longing to work on a cruise ship. It would be decent money and I’d get to see more of the world.

I applied for a job working for a cruise line and was offered it. A few weeks later I was on my way to the ship docked in Miami. It was 1997 and I was given an eight-month contract which meant sailing around the Caribbean, the Bahamas, Bermuda, Mexico, up the East Coast of the USA, finishing with a transatlantic cruise from the States to England. This was the perfect way to spend my time as I tried to figure out what the next step was going to be after my divorce seven months prior.

I spent the night before I boarded in a dingy motel in Miami. I slept fitfully. I was aware of dark shadows looming in my room. I was acutely aware of a sinister presence in and around the motel. The next day I learnt from my taxi driver that a murder had taken place in the vicinity.
