Chapter 12

Kit’s skin prickled as she logged into her cloud drive from Jamie’s laptop an hour later. The musketeers sat around the table with her and Lincoln stood behind, watching over her shoulder, his presence impossible to ignore. She’d deal with him later, but she wasn’t sure how. She couldn’t put her own desires before his happiness, couldn’t let him lose his job.

He’d resent her, and their relationship would be doomed.

And that was the likely result. One of them had to pay the price.

Her finger tapped the table as the folder loaded.

Waiting for the case to be solved meant a delay in their relationship. It gave her time to get used to the change, figure out how to make it work.

She sucked at being patient.

Kit scrolled through her data until she found the relevant folder and hit download. Would an answer to Paul’s murder be on there?

“Can you give me a copy of everything?” Lincoln asked.

“Tell me where you want it.”

Would it hurt if he stayed tonight? The idea of someone coming back to finish searching — with her house key — creeped her out. Maybe he could sleep in his old room and then he wouldn’t need to lie if he was asked.

She hated being scared in her own home.

She clicked on the first video file and it played, a silent view of her peering over Paul’s shoulder as he showed her what the drone could do. He’d bought the new drone and had been keen to show it off, bragging about how silent it was. It had been just before the problems with him had begun and she’d been excited too. It was amazing to see her farm, all her land, from a different perspective. She clicked it closed. “It’s not that one.”

She opened each file and though there was close to an hour of footage, none had anything more interesting than Paul riding a motorbike across a paddock.

She closed the last file, her shoulders slumping. “That’s it.” They had nothing to point to Paul’s murderer.

Lincoln swore. “There aren’t any more videos?”

“I don’t think so.”

“The police will do a thorough search.” Lincoln stepped away to make a phone call.

Hannah put her hand on Kit’s. “Maybe he hid it in a different folder.”

He had been secretive around the computer over the last few weeks, shutting down windows if she’d come close. “Maybe.” She should do a file search.

Lincoln came back. “Albany station is going to email you a link. Can you set up a file transfer to it?”

“Sure.” It would likely take all night with her internet speed. She’d do the search in the morning. “Can I return your laptop tomorrow?” she asked Jamie.

“Keep it as long as you need. I’ve got my work one I can use.”

She wouldn’t keep it long. She had to replace her own computers and it would be a pain. All the damned software she had to install. She eyed Mai. “Could you help me when I get the new machines?”

Mai smiled. “Of course. Call me when you get them.
