"We're not meant for each other," I agreed.
"No," he agreed, his smile growing a little brighter, "we're not."
The crowd began roaring again as I stood up and embraced Vincent. Selena Marion was stunned, having most likely expected a whole different confession, not a mutual agreement to "break up." She dashed off the stage as Vincent and I let go, beaming at one another.
"I couldn't let you do it," he said softly. "You're always sacrificing yourself for me, it's time I do it for you."
"You've got a heart of gold, Blackewell," I said, patting his chest. "I will write the most beautiful eulogy for you at your funeral." We both looked towards the backstage area, where the crew and other individuals were gawking at us or each other, probably wondering what the hell was going on. Funnily enough, my mother was doing an inconspicuous victory dance while my father fished out a fifty euro piece and handed it over to her.
"She won't be that mad," Vincent laughed as his eyes scanned for his mother. She was nowhere in sight, and neither was her husband. "Right?" * * *
"
Vincent had opted to ride in the private limousine with me on the way back to the palace. The moment we had arrived, however, Vincent had been summoned to one of the rooms immediately. So now everyone sat in my mother's favorite tea parlor, listening as Vincent faced the wrath of the she-demon.
Archer sat with Jasper, the two of them engaged in a furious thumb war. Why my brother still wore those sunglasses was beyond my comprehension, considering how no one would recognize him on the spot without them. Paired with that ridiculous reindeer sweater, he probably caught more attention than he deflected.
Alec stood by the piano, continuing his cocoa testing with Alfred, who was pouring more and more hot chocolate into several tea cups as Alec downed each cup with ardor. A chocolaty mustache had formed above his lips after the third cup.
Michael was nowhere in sight. It seemed he had gone with my parents and grandmother into another room. A part of me was disappointed at the lack of his presence. The other part was slightly relieved. I hadn't thought of what I would say to him yet.
Abigail shouted again and I winced. "And I thought our family was slightly dysfunctional," Archer scoffed, looking in the direction of the room the Blackewells were occupying.
A few more minutes and I blew out an impatient breath. Alec was now on his fifth round of tastetesting, and when he noticed me staring at him, he made a face, giving himself a double-chin and crossing his eyes while smiling with only the top row of his teeth.
I returned with an equally atrocious face. On and on we kept throwing expressions at each other, seeing who could look worse when Archer sighed, "You're embarrassing the family name, little Banks. Stop." "Why aren't you telling Alec off?" I countered.
"His normal face is already an embarrassment to the Darkwood name.
