Chapter Four

“Marci, I need to make a call.”

Marshall was fixin’ to tear someone or someones a new asshole, and he was just going to start at the top.

“Sure.” Her impassive expression never changed. “The pay phone out of business?”

“No, but you don’t want me using it in the store. Can I bum your cell? I’ll pay you for minutes.”

“Okay, but no farther than the picnic table out back with it.”

“Marci.” He put a twenty on the counter. “You know me.”

“The picnic table.” She scowled, suddenly impressively intimidating like the werebear she was. “I know you when you get mad.”

“Yeah, yeah.” He took her sleek little smartphone and headed out back, knowing Ben and Jakob would meet him. Jakob refused to let go of Ben, freaking out that they had to leave home so soon.

He heard the truck door shut as he sat, dialing Stephen from memory, willing his Alpha to answer the strange number.

“Hello?” Stephen barked out the greeting. “This had better be Marshall.”

“It is.”

“You finally get a phone?”

“Nope. Borrowed. Got a question.” Marshall felt his anger boiling up in his chest.

“I got an answer.”

Marshall sure as shit hoped so. “Why did someone have our mate Jakob sent to some pray-the-wolf-away cult?”

There was a long silence, then, “Come again?”

Ben’s hand landed on his shoulder and Jakob sat pressed against his side.

“You heard me. Jakob is alive. He went to Granny, and she sent him here. He was darted. The fucking scars, Steve. Someone hurt our mate.”

“What? Jakob? Your Jakob? Are you serious?” The tone of Stephen’s voice was joyous, one of pure wonder. “He’s alive?”

“He showed up yesterday.” Was it just yesterday? “Scarred and starved and beaten, Steve.” He couldn’t believe Steve was in on this. Their friend was a terrible liar.

“Who? Who beat him? One of us? I’ll tear him limb from limb.”

“No. He says the pack sent him away, though. He has letters. Emails from me and Ben.”

“Send me everything.” Stephen’s rage crackled along the phone line. “I want to know who fucking did this.”

“William. Brother William.” Jakob spoke next to the phone and Stephen went silent.

“Does he mean the wolf who came through? The one who stayed for a few weeks that spring?”

Jakob nodded. “Brother William.”

“Goddess. He -- he must have been culling what he thought were weaknesses. I’ll get Xeno on it, as well as Fallon.”

Fallon was Stephen’s secret weapon, and just the mention of his name gave Marsh a shiver. Guy was a dire freakin’ wolf.

“I want blood, Stephen.”

“I want you three to stay there, just in case they’re looking for him. I want to know how he got free, because if they followed him, we’ll have a problem. You said he came to your granny?”

“Sister Abby said it was time to move on, to ask for forgiveness,” Jakob said. “So I could go to the next level.”

“You hear that, Boss?” Old habits died hard. Steve was the boss.

“I hear it, but it doesn’t make sense. What level? What forgiveness? Why would they let him go after keeping him?”

Ben rumbled.
