Chapter 3
âTitusâ¦â He was halfway across the room, and Ezra went after him. âThatâs not what I was saying.â
âIs being someoneâs everything good for either person?â Titus stopped at the fireplace taking up much of one whole wall. âThatâs what you said.â Heâd already imagined two Christmas stockings hanging there. âThatâs what you asked.â And a kiss in front of it on New Yearâs Eve when it might finally be cold enough to light it. âWhatâs your answer?â
âMy answer isâ¦â Ezra tried to take Titus in his arms.
âJust say it.â Titus held him off again.
âI think my answer isâ¦no.â
âNo.â
âI canât be your everything.â
âSo, it wasnât my imagination when I thought the word commitment didnât want to come out of your mouth.â
âWhat?â
âWhen we were talking about opening an inn last night.â
âIâm a businessman. Someone who knows building codes, structure, electrical and plumbing requirements, zoning variationsâ¦â Ezra raised a finger to count off each thing. âThis place is a couple hundred years old. There would be all sorts of changes weâd have to make and some we canât. No choice.â
Titus headed for the stairs.
âWhere are you going?â
âYouâre not being honest with me.â
âI am.â
âThe commitment wouldnât have anything to do with us?â
âTitusâ¦â
âI know my name.â
âFine. It would. If we go in on some sort of business venture, weâd be tied together for twenty, thirty, fifty years, at least until the initial investment is recouped or paid back.â
âAnd thatâs a horrific thought for you?â
Ezra looked up and then away. âItâs a scary one.â
âOh.â
âNone of what Iâm saying is a comment on how much you mean to me or how much I want to mean to you.â He went partway up to where Titus stood. âWeâd be business partners andâ¦â
âLovers?â
âYes. New lovers, and I wouldnât want potential issues and worries about deadlines and work changes, failed inspections,â he did the finger thing again, âbudget overrides, and profits and debits spilling over into us. The stress of one is enough without putting them together.â
âSo, now being with me is stressful.â
âStop putting words in my mouth. Youâre in a bad frame of mind.â
âAnd thatâs annoying.â
âItâs worrisome, Titus. Because I want to fix it, and though Iâve told you a thousand times what happened with your client is not your fault, though I remind you almost daily heâs better, which I only know because you know it and say so, it does no good.â Ezra went down the steps, maybe giving up. âThough I tell you I love you and that youâll find your way again, itâs been months, and it seems my words donât mean anything.â He turned and started back up. âBesides all that, a person should have many things to get out of bed for in the morning, to enjoy, to love. I love you. I love my job.â
âWell, I donât have one of those.â
âYou will again someday, and hopefully itâll be one as important to you asâ¦â
âUs?â
âTitusâ¦â Ezra could almost reach him. âI donât know if thereâs a measurement for these things. Probably. I love you more than I love a new necktie.
